Data clean up is fun!

I can't say enough good things about this book! The authors, Ken Puls and Miguel Escobar, present Power Query in a way that is totally accessible to Excel users. There are clear explanations, good examples and files so the reader can perform the steps along with the book. I have gone through the book at least three times, and participated in a training workshop given by the authors, and I continue to learn new things each time.

In the book Ken and Miguel say, "There is no doubt in our minds that Power Query will change the way Excel pros work with data forever." I'm not sure I'm quite to the level as an Excel pro (I hope to be when I grow up!), but this book definitely HAS changed how I work with data. Power Query and the M language makes it fun to do data cleanup!

QuickBooks users problem solver

Probably the only decent book out there that is specifically geared to the power query model. I was looking for a solution to merge two QuickBooks reports I had dumped out to CSV files. This book solved my problem. Can't beat that. If you are a QB user and hate the Advance Report engine, dump that junk and dig into power query.

11/22/16: I have since used PQ extensively since acquiring this book. This is a great starter book, but I quickly flew past it into more complicated areas not covered by this edition. There is a whole lot of stuff Ken and Miguel can go into in a follow up book. They should look at publishing an edition that focuses on the Mashup Query Language solutions itself as a companion to the this book.

Best Reference Out There for Power Query and Its M Language!

Awesome reference - I have used it so much that it is ragged and frayed! And what's neat is that everything that you learn about Power Query (PQ) is translatable to Excel Power BI (where it found as Get Data). I like to describe PQ as the "Excel import wizard on steroids" and it is invaluable to those of us that use/combine/mash together data from disparate sources. This reference has the broadest and deepest compilation of PQ "stuff" out there. Couple that with a well keyed Google/Bing search and you can easily find a way to your data end point.

About the Author
Dr. David R. Anderson is a textbook author and Professor Emeritus of Quantitative Analysis in the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati. He has served as head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management and as Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration. He was also coordinator of the College's first Executive Program. In addition to introductory statistics for business students, Dr. Anderson has taught graduate-level courses in regression analysis, multivariate analysis, and management science. He also has taught statistical courses at the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Professor Anderson has received numerous honors for excellence in teaching and service to student organizations. He is the coauthor of ten textbooks related to decision sciences and actively consults with businesses in the areas of sampling and statistical methods. Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, he earned his BS, MS, and PhD degrees from Purdue University.

Dr. Dennis J. Sweeney is a textbook author, Professor Emeritus of Quantitative Analysis and founder of the Center for Productivity Improvement at the University of Cincinnati. He also served five years as head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and four years as Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration. In addition, he has worked in the management science group at Procter & Gamble and has been a visiting professor at Duke University. Professor Sweeney has published more than 30 articles in the area of management science and statistics. The National Science Foundation, IBM, Procter & Gamble, Federated Department Stores, Kroger, and Cincinnati Gas & Electric have funded his research, which has been published in MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, OPERATIONS RESEARCH, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING, DECISION SCIENCES, and other journals. Dr. Sweeney is the coauthor of ten textbooks in the areas of statistics, management science, linear programming, and production and operations management. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, he earned a BS degree from Drake University, graduating summa cum laude. He received his MBA and DBA degrees from Indiana University, where he was an NDEA Fellow.

Dr. Thomas A. Williams is Professor of Management Science in the College of Business at Rochester Institute of Technology where he was the first chairman of the Decision Sciences Department. He teaches courses in management science and statistics, as well as graduate courses in regression and decision analysis. Before joining the College of Business at RIT, Professor Williams served for seven years as a faculty member in the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati, where he developed the undergraduate program in Information Systems and then served as its coordinator. The co-author of 11 leading textbooks in the areas of management science, statistics, production and operations management, and mathematics, Professor Williams has been a consultant for numerous Fortune 500 companies and has worked on projects ranging from the use of data analysis to the development of large-scale regression models. He earned his B.S. degree at Clarkson University and completed his graduate work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Dr. Jeffrey D. Camm is Professor of Quantitative Analysis and head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management at the University of Cincinnati, where he has been since 1984. He also has served as a visiting scholar at Stanford University and a visiting professor of Business Administration at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Dr. Camm has published more than 30 papers in the general area of optimization applied to problems in operations management, and his research has been funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, The Office of Naval Research, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Among his honors, he was named the Dornoff Fellow of Teaching Excellence and received the 2006 INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of Operations Research Practice. Dr. Camm currently serves as editor-in-chief of INTERFACES and is on the editorial board of INFORMS TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION. He received his PhD in Management Science from Clemson University.

James J. Cochran is Professor of Applied Statistics and the Rogers-Spivey Faculty Fellow in the Department of Information Systems, Statistics and Management Science at the University of Alabama. Prior to joining the University of Alabama faculty, Dr. Cochran was Professor of Quantitative Analysis and the Bank of Ruston, Barnes, Thompson, & Thurman Endowed Research Professor at Louisiana Tech University. He has been a visiting scholar at Stanford University, Universidad de Talca, and the University of South Africa. Professor Cochran has published over two dozen papers in the development and application of operations research and statistical methods. He has published his research in MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, THE AMERICAN STATISTICIAN, COMMUNICATIONS IN STATISTICS--THEORY AND METHODS, EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF OPERATIONAL RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF COMBINATORIAL OPTIMIZATION, and other professional journals. He received the 2008 INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of Operations Research Practice and the 2010 Mu Sigma Rho Statistical Education Award. Professor Cochran was elected to the International Statistics Institute in 2005 and named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2011. A strong advocate for effective operations research and statistics education as a means of improving the quality of applications to real problems, he has organized and chaired teaching effectiveness workshops in Uruguay, South Africa, Colombia, India, Argentina, Kenya, Cameroon, and Croatia. He has served as a statistics and operations research consultant to numerous companies and not-for-profit organizations. He served as editor-in-chief of INFORMS TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION from 2007 to 2012, and is on the editorial board of INTERFACES, the JOURNAL OF QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS IN SPORTS, and ORION. He holds a BS, MS, and MBA from Wright State University and a PhD from the University of Cincinnati.

but there are much better books out there that explain the material in a ...

The book is very detailed, but there are much better books out there that explain the material in a less convoluted way. Had to use handouts and photocopies from other books for class work , because this book was just too verbose and needlessly complicated.

It's the textbook but kind of messed up. seemed great that I got it for way less than the normal ones just had to deal with the do not use outside of Asia corner of it. Been using it all semester and started noticing a lot of the pages are out of order.

Textbook for class

Not too bad, but I wish the selected answers in the back of the book also showed us how they did the problems, so that when I got a different answer I would be able to see what I did differently or wrong. I got this book for my stats class because this is the required text.

My sincere thanks go to Idries Shah – specifically for introducing me to Jami’s epic love-story – and in general for shedding so much light on Sufi thinking, both in its traditional and its current manifestations. If this new translation comes nearer than its western predecessors to rendering some of the kernel as opposed to the mere husk of the original, then the credit belongs to the clarifying and revitalising influence of Shah’s works.

In this tavern, where so many a sweet tale is sung, I cannot hear so much as an echo of this melody. My fellows have drunk their fill and gone, leaving nothing behind but their empty jars; I see no ripe one at this feast of the raw, who holds a cup of this wine in his hand. They have left us neither jug, nor cup, nor cupbearer: nothing but sorrow now remains.

But take heart, Jami: have done with diffidence! Whether it be lees or clearest wine, bring forth your drink!”

About the Author
Hakim Nuruddin Jami(1414-92 CE) lived most of his life in Herat and studied in close association with the Sufi Master Saaduddin Kashgari and (more remotely) Khwaja Ahrar, the supreme leader of the Naqshbandi Order. He was the author of about fifty works, including a collection of seven epic poems entitled haft awrang (Seven Thrones), of which Yusuf and Zulaikha is but one. (He wrote this masterpiece in his seventieth year, in 1483 – one year before Sandro Botticelli produced his Birth of Venus.) Jami also wrote nafahat al-‘uns (breaths of the breeze of friendship), a lengthy compendium of biographies of the Sufi Masters, and the beharistan (Abode of Spring), a collection of verse and teaching stories in the manner of Saadi’s gulistan. More details about this excellent man, whose manifest genius repelled some, but whose boundless compassion and humility captivated many, many more, are to be found in the Afterword of the present book.

Translator David Pendlebury has combined careers in language teaching, both in the UK and overseas with a lifelong interest in the ideas expressed so powerfully in Central Asia and the Middle East through the medium of poetry.

Judaic, Christian and Islamic versions exist--derived perhaps from an ancient Egyptian source--but none could replace Jami’s rendering. David Pendlebury’s prose translation reaches for the kernel, not merely the husk, of this allegory. But while it does so, there is also humor, excitement, romance and an abundance of insight into human behavior.

Pleasing translation of a Sufi classic love story

Pendlebury has taken a classical Persian poem and turned it into a highly readable novel. The poem is based on a story from Islamic folklore, which is itself based on the chapter about Joseph in the Quran. It takes off from the part of the story where the master's wife tries to seduce Joseph and tells "the story behind the story." Zulaikha is the name Islamic folklore gives to the master's wife (known as Potiphar's wife in the Bible). This Sufi classic humanizes her and makes us more sympathetic to her desire. I have used this book semester after semester in my courses on the literature of the Middle East. My students mostly find it delightful, after they get used to the way the Persian poet revels in piling metaphor upon metaphor, hyperbole upon hyperbole. I tell them not to expect realism; we are in the realm of the mythical here, where every maiden is a "moon-faced beauty" and every pair of pursed lips is "tight as a rosebud."

Indelible Classic of Esoteric Spiritual Allegory

The translation betrays the era in which it was produced. However this is mostly an impediment to a modern reader's demands of a style, not a barrier to the meaning or understanding of this important classic. In the spiritual literature of Love, Jami is a master of the stature equal to the more popularly known Rumi. Like Attar, Jami renders a gnostic reality in allegory that yields sublime insight for the attuned reader. This is accessible through the medium of this present translation.

I applaud this series of textbooks. It is without a doubt the best method I have ever taught with, but the true nature of this post is regarding a request for help. Last week, the Testing booklets were stolen from our institution's french department. I have been informed by the administration that they have reordered, but that Yale Univesity press expects a delivery time in excess of three weeks. If anyone knows of any ways to acquire the examinations sooner, please drop me a line at DrRMROGAN@hotmail.com. I cannot put off this test any further and am in great need of assistance. (This is in regards to lessons 24 and 25, Testing forms "D" if by chance anyone does come across this).

About the Author
Scott T. Young is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Management, Kellstadt Graduate School of Business at DePaul University. Previously, he was Associate Dean for Academic Programs (1997-1999) at the University of Utah. Awards and honors he has won include the Doctoral Faculty Teaching Award, 1994; Outstanding Teacher, U of Utah College of Business, 1988; and Joseph Rosenblatt Award for Innovative Education, U. of Utah, 1988. Professor Young has published numerous articles in journals such as the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Review of Business, International Journal of Production Research, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of World Business, Information and Management, International Business Review, Production and Inventory Management Journal, Production and Operations Management, International Journal of Purchasing and Materials Management, and the Journal of Education for Business. In addition, he is author of Managing Global Operations, (with Winter Nie), Westport, CT: Quorum Books, 1996.

Kanwalroop Kathy Dhanda is Associate Professor in the Department of Management, Dreihaus College of Business at DePaul University. Previously, Kathy was an Assistant Professor in the School of Business Administration at the University of Portland, Oregon where she was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Professor Award and the Pamplin Fellow Award. She is also an invited professor at AUT University in New Zealand, American University in Paris, and the Aalto University, Finland.

Kathy's academic scholarship focuses on sustainability issues with a primary emphasis in the areas of environmental modelling, carbon markets, emissions trading, corporate social responsibility and reverse logistics. She has been published in Operations Research, Journal of Business Ethics, Academy of Management Perspectives, Energy Economics, Journal of Public Policy and Marketing Policy Watch, Organization & Environment, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, as well as other journals. She is also the co-author of Environmental Networks: A Framework for Economic Decision-Making and Policy Analysis (Edward Elgar).

Kathy graduated cum laude from Angelo State University and received her doctorate degree in Management Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She lives in northern suburbs of Chicago with her husband, Adrian, and her two children, Arman and Ariana. She loves to read, travel and cook spicy food.

Amir Beck is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. He has published numerous papers, has given invited lectures at international conferences, and was awarded the Salomon Simon Mani Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Henry Taub Research Prize. He is on the editorial board of Mathematics of Operations Research, Operations Research, and Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications. His research interests are in continuous optimization, including theory, algorithmic analysis, and applications.
