I am not new to photoshop, I know a couple of things but I felt that I required some assistance to explore the capabilities of the programmme. This book is well written, simple to understand and very interesting. I recently purchased it and will give my self six days to complete it...It is not often that that persons can traanslate their knowledge in a form that makes in easy to understand. From my previous experiences, I was expecting boring and difficult to understand even if I based my decison on the reviews ...This is a fanatstic book.

I have only had the camera for a short time; however, I am amazed with what it can do. The Super Micro Function allowed me to get within an inch of the subject and still give me a great picture. My only complaint is that the LCD provides a brighter picture than the one actually taken; however, in reviewing the booklet, I see that I can make some alterations in brightness such that what I see may be what I get.
I am extremely happy with this purchase as it provides so much more than cameras of similar value.

I'm great with computers, but know NOTHING about Photoshop. Couldn't just intuitively use it like with most things. Compared different books. This one takes you from ground zero on up to using the program. The Photoshop for Dummies seamed geared to an audience that already knew how to use it. This is perfect for a total novice and those needing to learn more. The provided exercises are extremely helpful.

This is an excellently compiled collection of translated original source material regarding the Byzantine Empire. Here you can read about what the Byzantines thought about Byzantine. It's got wonderful sections about relations with the West, the Turks, Culture and Life, Politics, Christianity, etc. If you have any interest in Byzantine, you've got to get this book. Great for not only the serious scholar but the general reader as well. Don't rely on historians to translate history for you; Do it yourself

Contemporary writings make the best historical source material

This book garners together much of the same kind of contemporary writings surrounding the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople, as opposed to the western Roman Empire that seems to have expired almost 1000 years earlier. Like Rome, the Byzantine Empire was a polyglot collation of raw power, absolutism, religious freedom, religious tolerance (except towards each other) and extraordinary bursts of energy (see for example the building program carried out by Justinian and the brilliant general ship shown by Belisarius, Justinians most competent general).
Leaving aside some of Justinians scribe, Procopius, and his extraordinary accounts of the Empress Theodora bizarre personal habits, this series of contemporary collation is a rewarding series of observations of important religious, political and military episodes which also deals with important theological differences between Rome and The Patriarch of Constantinople, leading up to the great schism between the two: a more farcical schism I have yet to read about. The work allows the reader to select the sections of Byzantine history that are required and allows a fresh voice to that of the more usual historical texts which tell you what the authors believes to have occurred, and allows a better dissection of what the contemporary writers actually wrote at the relevant time.
Although it is not easy going I commend it to any serious student of the religious disputes that broke out from time to time, such as the dispute between iconoclasts and iconophobes, the results of some of which are still visible today in that brilliant piece of Byzantine church building under Justinian, the Hagia Sofiya (or Aya Sofia, however spelled), the manner in which the Byzantine state was governed, how big the changes were between emperors on such fascinating topics as tax farming, and the remarkable richness of Byzantine society (in good times) and its poverty (in bad times.) Of course some adjustments may need to be made from time to time by comparing the writings by two writes on the same subject, but history is always a subject that requires a balanced approach. In my opinion, this book compilation allows some quite good arguments to be mounted against accepted church (Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox) doctrines based on what was written rather than what people some hundreds of year later assert actually occurred.

Dr. Alan Ellman, author of best-selling Cashing In on Covered Calls, wears many hats during the course of a typical day. He is a licensed general dentist in the State of New York and the owner of a vitamin store called The Natural Vitamin and Herb Source of Long Island. In addition to these titles, Alan is also a licensed certified personal fitness trainer and a licensed real estate salesperson. Alan is also an avid real estate investor, owning properties in Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania and New York. He has often been invited to speak in front of large groups of investors about his successful investment properties. Of all the facets of his life, Alan has become most passionate about the stock market and call options in particular. He loves the challenge of beating the market and sharing his ideas and system with others. This has manifested itself in the form of seminars and one-on-one coaching classes. In particular, he wants to spread the word about selling call options to the blue collar investor. Excellent book on Covered Call Writing. Highly recommended!!!

I find Alan Ellman's "Exit Strategies for Covered Call Writing" to be very well written and easy to understand. I read this book and the Encyclopedia book and found both to be excellent. I also attended Alan's seminar on Covered Call Writing that was through the AAII - Los Angeles chapter. That was how I was first introduced to covered call writing. In the book, Alan Ellman goes into the details and spells out step by step in an organized, systematic approach how to write covered calls. I had stayed away from trading options for a long time due to the perceived complexity. It also seemed so time consuming to select a good underlying stock with the right risk/reward relationship so I took a trial subscription to his BCI newsletter to save some time. I work full time. This book is a must read for those who are interested in an income stream but are concerned about the protection of our principal and are risk averse. The book describes the exit strategies in such easy to understand layman's language that will build confidence that you are in control and you can mitigate risk. I have started writing covered calls using the Blue Collar methodology. A caveat is in order: I read the exit strategies book twice and did a walk through and spent a bit of time doing the what if scenarios. But I must say the book is excellent in terms of writing style and organization. I highly recommend this book and the encyclopedia book. I also recommend the BCI newsletter if you want to save time and pick good underlying stocks, which is key. You can do the entire process yourself but it is time consuming.

An excellent book especially for novices

Options are a complicated financial vehicle.
They can literally be used for foolish gambling with horrible odds, or for quite conservative strategies.

Writing covered calls with a plan for exit falls under conservative strategies, IMO, and Alan's book helps the beginner focus on
the important aspects of this strategy.

He not only cuts out the "noise" but has a methodical plan for closing out your open positions. Not only does he have work sheets, but also he will send you a free calculator you can use. Also the book lists many resources, since trading options requires numerous inputs and levels of understanding of stocks and how they behave.

IMO, he makes a potentially extremely difficult subject much more accessible to the new options trader, and he emphasizes the necessity to understand the concepts and the math.

Work and dedication will be required to become fluent in this activity, and Alan's book, methods, calculator and resource guides are easily worth much more than the price of the book.

Alan also seems quite accessible in that he responded shortly after I requested his free calculator sending me the calculator and the instructions. For those who use Excel, the calculator could be an example for doing your own formulas in your individual spreadsheet, and the formulas on his are accessible for viewing. Note: the Excel calculator is for intermediate to advanced Excel users, should you want to emulate some of its functions.

If you trade options for a while, you KNOW you need this!

Selling options is great, but what do you do when expiration is approaching and things are going badly? This book shows you how to get out of trouble, then explains what to do next. Don't trade options without reading Ellman's stuff! I started with this and it was great, but his first book, "Cashing in on Covered Calls" is a better place to start, then this.

The EFCA believes that our essential theological convictions are vitally connected to this gospel, the evangel, as that gospel message has come to us through the biblical and historic stream of Evangelical Christianity. As an exposition of Evangelical convictions this book will be useful both in the EFCA and in the broader Evangelical world.

This theological exposition speaks clearly but, as much as possible, without technical theological terms so that it can be profitable for all believers who need to be grounded in the essentials of the faith. Moreover, the theology set forth in this exposition is doxological-that is, it ought to lead us to exalt the greatness and grace of our God. As Paul instructs Timothy, "What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you-guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us" (2 Tim. 1:13-14). Evangelical Convictions was written with the prayer that it may be an instrument of the Spirit to help those in the EFCA, and faithful believers everywhere, to guard, and to bear witness to, the good deposit of the gospel.

Evangelical Convictions

If we call ourselves Evangelicals, what do we mean by that? What do we believe, and, more importantly, why? Written as a "fleshing out" of the doctrines of the Evangelical Free Church (and published and marketed by the EFCA), Evangelical Convictions is both a Gospel primer and a textbook for understanding the essentials. It's laid out in a textbook format, so it's easy to use as a reference. But it's written in clear, clean and compelling language, so it's also a good read.
I think it would be a great idea for every Evangelical Free Church to get this book into the hands of its members and attenders, but it's highly recommended for anyone who would like to know more about the "glorious gospel of the blessed God." (1 Tim 1:11)

Contained within this book is a well-researched, well-defined, and well-versed explanation of the theological doctrine behind the statement of faith of the EFCA. If one were to study this academically, it will prove to be an invaluable resource to have as the building blocks to any piece of work by an evangelical believer. Not only does it serve as an academic resource, but it can also be used by anyone who desires to get a strong and comprehensive understanding of the faith and beliefs of evangelicals, specifically the EFCA. I would recommend this to anyone who desires to gain a stronger grasp of the ecclesial roles of the church, the power works and glory of the triune God, and to learn where we as God's creation fit into the picture.

Evangelical Convictions is dense...like a pound cake.

The book is a very dense systematic treatment of 10 major Christian doctrines. It is full of scripture references, theological reflection of each phrase in the statement, explanations of historical theology and the development of Free Church teaching, the drawing of clear boundary lines (affirmations and denials), and much more (including a very helpful appended explanation of how congregationalism functions in the EFCA--great to see that in print). It is the first place I will go to show anyone what we believe.

And it's written in a winsome, humble, warm and yet courageous prose.

It won't be easy for everyone to read. Evangelical Convictions is not full of folksy stories and anecdotes (though there are good illustrations made to explain various points). It is dense, but like a pound cake--thick, rich, and theologically sweet.

Evangelical Convictions is encouraging to me, not just because I agree with everything in it (even the various "balances" struck throughout seem judicious and well put). But also because it points to some theological health in the EFCA.

When the leaders of the EFCA engaged our whole family of churches in a process of revising our statement of faith, I was ultimately encouraged. There were some rocky spots in the process, of course, but the leaders handled the whole thing with strong integrity, humility and courageousness.

I was really pleased to be a part of a family of churches that (among other things) valued doctrine enough to spend a lot of time on it, to improve what was already good, to include as many as could be included without compromising the gospel, and to move from theology to doxology.

Now, there is a book that captures it all.

I chewed on wonderful resource for over a month, reading it in snatches.

That's just the way to enjoy a theological pound cake.

Wonderful Gentle Story

I don't usually review books because so many others do a better job of it than I can do, but I want to give this book another 5 star rating. The Red Notebook is going on my list of special books. The story moves along smoothly and a great deal happens in a simple and elegant way. It's not particularly realistic, so a suspension of disbelief is necessary in order to appreciate this plot.

I admit that I love happy endings, so that is my bias. Fans of gritty realism will be unlikely to enjoy this charming tale, but others who enjoy a well written story about an unlikely chain of events that ends well, may be briefly transported to Paris and a search for the owner of a stolen handbag.

Perfectly charming

While walking to his bookshop one morning, Laurent Letellier notices a nice lady’s handbag perched on top of a trash bin. Suspecting the rightful owner may have been mugged, Laurent takes the purse with him with the idea of returning it. Careful examination of the contents revealed several little treasures including a small red notebook of her observations, all of which told a bit about the woman but no clues about her identity. At his daughter’s urging, Laurent follows the few leads he has and just when he hits a dead end, a chance encounter not only unlocks the mystery but also draws him deeper into a stranger’s life. Although he would love to actually meet Laure, the woman who owns the purse, Laurent feels he has trespassed beyond all polite boundaries and chooses to remain anonymous. It will take some creative meddling to bring these two prospective lovers together.

Set in France and translated from French, this charming light read draws readers in as Laurent’s warm, caring nature carries him through the Parisian streets searching for a complete stranger. There is just enough family history and backstory to add credibility to this sweet melding of mystery and romance that concludes on a satisfyingly upbeat note.

An uplifting and charming read.

I have to award five stars for this wonderful little book because it made me happy; like drinking a glass of French champagne, it lifts you up and takes you along on a short and delightful journey.
There is so much darkness in our world......the news is bad enough but a lot of modern literature is dark as well, so The Red Notebook was like a breath of fresh air.
This book would come under the genre of light romance, but it is so much more than that. I enjoy books with depth, and I felt Antoine Laurain accomplishes this with his clever writing and his subtle presentation of such a charming story.
Translators, unfairly, rarely get a mention, but excellent translation from French to English by Emily Boyce and Jane Aitken further enhances this little gem.
Go purchase this book for a rainy day when you simply want to lose yourself for a few lovely hours.

About the Author
John von Neumann (1903-1957) was one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century and a pioneering figure in computer science. A native of Hungary who held professorships in Germany, he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in 1933. Later he worked on the Manhattan Project, helped develop the IAS computer, and was a consultant to IBM. An important influence on many fields of mathematics, he is the author of "Functional Operators, Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics", and "Continuous Geometry" (all Princeton). Oskar Morgenstern (1902-1977) taught at the University of Vienna and directed the Austrian Institute of Business Cycle Research before settling in the United States in 1938. There he joined the faculty of Princeton University, eventually becoming a professor and from 1948 directing its econometric research program. He advised the United States government on a wide variety of subjects. Though most famous for the book he co-authored with von Neumann, Morgenstern was also widely known for his skepticism about economic measurement, as reflected in one of his many other books, "On the Accuracy of Economic Observations" (Princeton). Harold Kuhn is Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Economics at Princeton University. Ariel Rubinstein is Professor of Economics at Tel Aviv University and at New York University.

Detailed examination of game theory

I read this book when I was a teenager, in the early 1960s. I found that it explained a lot of things about game theory, but found it went into detail in some places, and I turned to Dresher's Theory of Games of Strategy and Luce and Raiffa's Games and Decisions for simpler explanations. I ordered the book now to look at what I studied so long ago. It is indeed highly detailed - the detail surprised me in some cases. And I found that the theory it presents can't always be applied to the real world. But I liked the book so well that I ordered it in 2013, or more than 50 years later.

The wonder of nothing special

There are so many contradictions within this quirky memoir that it could only possibly be true.

This is a memoir of life right around the start of the 19th century. It recounts the adult life of Shen Fu, a man who appears to have been ordinary in the extreme. Although educated, he did not pass the literary tests of the civil service. At best, his career could have been a secretary under one of the successful examinees, but his times weren't always the best. His positions never lasted, and his business attempts failed. Often, he sold his possessions and his wife's down to the clothes on their backs (or less). He fell out with his family, in a time when filial duty was enforced by law, and became outcast in almost every sense.

But his life never wholly failed, either. Perhaps it was the glow of nostalgia, but his twenty-three years of marriage were always a joy to him, even when his wife's health failed, and even when she may have been the source of some of his problems. They had their times of poverty, but never to the point of starvation. He was honorable enough to quit a corrupt position when it offended his honor too deeply. He was devoted enough to heal the familial rifts. His joys and Yun's were simple - travel, each other, the beauty of the full moon, and maybe a little too much wine shared with happy company. Shen Fu and his devoted Yun never demanded much from their lives, and usually got enough to enjoy.

The text wanders. The first three chapters chart the ups and downs of the marriage to his beloved wife. She died early, from some frightening disease. Still, she and he accepted it stoically, or mostly did. The fourth chapter collects a few decades of moments together, the sights and sounds of travel. With his wife and after her, Shun Fu visited temples, sacred caves, and pleasure districts, reported in some drifting collage of personal history. Despite the "six" promised in the title, we have only four. It's probably better that way, according to the appendices.

I really think I would have liked Shun Fu. He was honest enough, loving enough, and devoted enough to his children. Even when his own situation deteriorated badly, he fostered his son as best he could and sheltered his daughter with people who could marry her well. He never wholly succeeded or failed, but muddled through the chances that appeared to him. He was no grand hero, nor villain, nor idle dreamer, nor driven workaholic. He was just a guy, living some guy's life pretty well. Maybe he dressed up his memories just a bit, but don't we all?

A passionate and romantic story

"Six Records" (also known as "Six Chapters of a Floating Life"), c. 1805, is an extraordinarily frank autobiography that is totally unprecedented and unparalleled in the history of Chinese literature. It describes the life of the author Shen Fu and his beloved wife, Ch'en Yun (1763-1803), in extremely revealing detail. The intimacy and joy shared by the couple are as unusual by normal standards of Chinese married life as is the author's daringness in revealing them to others. Their close, playful relationship stands in defiant opposition to the staid decorum of married life expected by Confucian ideology.
A thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring read. Ch'en Yun is a woman ahead of her time who admirably balances her love of learning and passion for life with her duties and obligations as a traditional Chinese wife.

A charming and touching autobiography of a poor scholar

This is a most charming and touching story of a poor Chinese scholar-painter struggling to make a decent living under poverty and mounting debts. In his autobiography, Shen Fu shares with us his experiences, his love for a talented wife and other simple things in life, his family and friends, and travels throughout Manchu China. Despite mounting poverty, he has great passion for living and these records of his experiences and impressions are as relevant to us as it were to him 200 years ago. A highly recommended book and a definite "must-read" over the weekend.

About the Author
Jeffrey S. Dixon received his BA in International Relations and Political Science/History from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He received his PhD in Political Science from Rice University in Houston, Texas, writing his dissertation on the consequences of third-party military intervention on civil war outcomes. He has published articles on the causes of civil wars, how civil wars end, and the duration of civil wars. He is currently Distinguished Graduate Faculty and Associate Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University-Central Texas and co-host of the Correlates of War Civil War Dataset. Meredith Reid Sarkees is a long-time affiliate of the Correlates of War (COW) Project, having worked with COW founder J. David Singer for many years. She has served as host or co-host of the datasets on inter-state, extra-state, intra-state, and non-state wars for over twenty years and has published a number of articles about the trends in warfare. A handbook on all of the COW wars, Resort to War 1816-2007, was written by Sarkees and Frank Whelon Wayman. Sarkees also co-edited Advancing Peace Research: Leaving Traces, Selected Articles by J. David Singer with Jody Lear and Diane Macaulay as a testament to the significance of the COW project and Singer's work. Sarkees's other research area focuses upon women's leadership and the status of women in both academia and the realm of international relations. She co-authored with Nancy E. McGlen a groundbreaking study of the women serving in American foreign policy institutions, Women in Foreign Policy. Sarkees currently serves as president of Global Women's Leadership in International Security (GWLIS).
