Look forward to more

I actually would give this book three and a half stars. I am an avid fan of Fantasy, of course like many I started reading Tolkien as a young teen in the 70's and have been reading Fantasy (my first love) ever since and I am very, very picky. This is a very decent debut novel and kept me turning the pages.

This book is indeed populated by the types of characters we have seen before in other novels. ex warriors, stable hands (or falconer hands), damsels in distress, strange creatures of both good and evil and a plot that is unfolding throughout the book. While all these characters have been seen before, the author here still manages to make the journey a fun and enjoyable read while giving it a fresh perspective. I will return and read his subsequent novels and see how he grows, because I think he may go on to do great things.

The magic system in this book is more on the lines of Tolkien or Lewis, its more of a deep magic that lays within the earth rather than the type of magic that is found in novels like Sanderson or Rothfuss, where there are explained laws governing the use of magic. While I absolutely love the magic systems of Sanderson and others, I also love the magic of Tolkien and Lewis where it resides in the land and creatures, so I was really able to enjoy this book for that aspect.

To be sure there are some clunky parts. Some of the writing is from multiple character pov and they can interchange quickly so there were a couple times I thought, wait a second, whose is this talking. A couple other quibbles would be some editing overlooks. A horse that is without testicles is called a gelding (not a gilding) when wolves are injured they would yelp, not whelp, unless they were very pregnant and decided to have puppies right on the spot. A couple other small redundancies kept jumping out, several lines described the gorgons "with their tails" wrapped around their legs. Once or twice, fine but not four or more times. If there is a difference between tails around legs and a tail being dragged (as in a hierarchy thing) it doesn't have to be repeated over and over, felt kind of like being hit with a verbal stick "see the tail is wrapped around its leg" I did get it the first two times. Perhaps instead just draw the reader to the gorgon that is different from the masses, rather than continually describing the masses.

Overall this is a very decent debut novel and I will look forward to further from this author.

To the author, if you are reading this, I don't review every book I read, some authors with huge fan bases like Martin, Tolkien, my comments really add nothing, not that my review is any spectacular addition here. I don't hold back criticism to win an authors favor or notice, I write exactly how I see it, if you were my friend sending me this novel, you would have gotten the same review with perhaps a more detail. I hope you take this review as encouragement and soldier on, because I am truly looking forward to the next one, and that is saying something, for me anyway. Also, employ a professional editor.Best of luck

Very nice high fantasy epic.

There is a lot to recommend this book and little to detract from it. I like the characters, I like the plot, I like the action. It is all pretty good fun.

This literary romp is the story of a land and people beset by dark forces, told from shifting points of view. We are introduced to the characters one at a time in a straight forward, yet not uninteresting manor. Some evil needs a killin and we've been shown the ones who are going to do it. The characters fill a spectrum of diverse ages, backgrounds and races. Each perspective renders a person with their own distinct history: different needs, motivations, and frailties. As chaos builds around them, the heroes struggle to find their path in the unfolding saga... with a great deal slashing, stabbing and hacking along the way.

This is the first installment of an action filled fantasy epic. It seems very promising. The author does a number of things very well for a first installment. While there is plenty for the reader to consume, certain things are only glimpsed, to doubtlessly be played out in later chapters. For example there is talk of magic, but we don't barely see any magic happening in this book. There are other references to unwritten monsters, evil powers, distant lands, and so on. Lots and lots for the reader to look forward to.

The worst I can say about this books is (a) it is straight forward and not very complex. Not a lot of unforeseen plot twist, and the writing is very tight. And (b) I found a few editing errors, but only a handful.

I was initally going to give this a 5 star, because I just plain really liked this, but in fairness 4 is more appropriate because of its complexity. But for you it may easily be a 5. If you like high fantasy tropes, lots of quick action, in a good old G vs. E tale then you most definitely will enjoy this one. Eagerly awaiting the next installment.

“The book for review is “A Dark Tyranny (Of Darkness & the Light Book 1)” by C.M. Pendleton. It falls in the genre of fantasy.

Enter the world where Gorgons, a Nighteye and Acolytes exist. To the humans they are of myth and storytelling of time past. But no, they are real and ready to fight the world they live in, some together against a common cause which happens to be a king. One that not beloved by all.

The king is not popular, people are willing to go to war to invade the kingdom. Even his own brother is on the other side. A brother who is referred to as the devil due to his lack of color.

Meet the Acolytes, Matthias and Luras. One has accepted his fate, the other has not. They have been chosen by a greater power to help fight in the battle of good versus evil. Meet a young slave Finn whose love for a young woman of nobility knows no bounds as he tracks across the land to save her from the people who has taken the young woman captive.

Armies versus armies. Good versus evil. Slave, mythical creatures and a discarded King’s brother meet in this novel. Who will win and at what cost?

I am normally a reader who have some problems when the list of characters is longer than normal. There are a lot of names tossed in this book. Yet I had no problem remembering who was who. I attached myself to one of the heroes in the book, and when I was getting to the end and it appeared that he might die, I became upset with the author. I was taken with the character and that only happened due to how the author wrote him in this novel. I did get a sense of how it was going to end but it didn’t take away from the book. A good pick up in my opinion. And for someone who does not read fantasy as a norm to me this is a thumb

This Book Could (Radically) Change Your Life

Let me begin by saying that reading Your Destiny Switch was thrilling and satisfying on many levels. I found myself cheering and grinning while I read--thankful that someone has FINALLY melded common sense, compassion and the Law of Attraction into a practical, encouraging manual on making the most out of life.

It has taken me YEARS of experimentation using wisdom gleaned from studying sacred texts and reading self-help/psychology books to undo destructive thought patterns that begat emotional chaos and confusion. Written in an engaging, lucid style, Peggy McColl explains what I found to be true via trial and error in her book Your Destiny Switch. (How I wish I had this book a decade ago!)

Now, I will tell you that I was skeptical at first, especially with the Hay House hype surrounding this book. ("Not another shallow Hay House dud ala Dyer", I groaned.) But despite the tacky publicity blitz surrounding Your Destiny Switch, I can honestly say that this book delivers in terms of showing readers how to master key emotions and use them to live a life of peace, joy and abundance.

Now, when I say "abundance", I'm not talking about the narcissistic money grabbing shtick often present in Law of Attraction products (can you say "The Secret"?). And, neither is Peggy McColl. Ms. McColl discusses "false positive" feelings, differentiating them from authentic positive emotions. In other words, unlike some authors (e.g. Lynn Grabhorn), she doesn't tell you to deny, ignore, or judge negative feelings while forcing "happiness", but rather encourages readers to approach troubling emotions with curiosity and gentleness--embracing the valuable lessons they can impart.

I was surprised (and impressed) that Your Destiny Switch actually addressed--quite specifically--some of the misgivings I've had about some New Thought/LofA teachings. For example, how can one "turn up the volume" on a particular emotion when he/she has never experienced it? Well, Ms. McColl addresses this with Switching Strategy #12.

And what about compassion for those in difficult circumstances--or dealing with challenging, negative individuals? Rather than the arrogant posturing of some authors (e.g. Rhonda Byrne), who encourage readers to avoid or ignore such people (after all, they're not vibrating in alignment with my fabulous, self indulgent needs!) Ms. McColl provides practical, compassionate tools for meeting people right where they are--and imbuing such situations with kindness, clarity and helpful solutions. (Of course, whether such individuals accept it is up to them. Some people get huge energetic payoffs for playing the victim.)

Your Destiny Switch likens emotional states to dimmer panels, which can either increase or decrease light in a room. Ms. McColl describes how we can easily assess our emotional states using this model, and how we can then decide to switch into more empowering emotional states--and how they may be different for each person and vary according to situation. For example, if you want to start a new business, you may ramp up enthusiasm and curiosity, but if you're seeking peace and harmony, you'd ramp up a different set of feelings.

This book also shows readers how to re-write and edit the painful "movies" of memories, cultivate faith in Divine timing, release attachments, re-cast flaws as strengths, create a mission statement, use powerful switching strategies and "illuminators" for living your destiny and how to stay true to your OWN unique, self-determined values.

I've highlighted quite a few passages in Your Destiny Switch and I'd like to share some of these valuable nuggets with you:

* "The more we feel that things `have' to go the way we want them to, the more attached we are to how our lives are `supposed' to work out, and the more suffering we create for ourselves. On the other hand, the less attached we are, the less we suffer."

* "When you raise the volume on your sense of worthiness, you don't feel a constant need to have others validate you. You experience a state of grace and are above any mean-spirited criticism. You don't commit acts of violence against yourself, either by saying cruel things to yourself or letting others do so."

Solid, but not groundbreaking

Initially, this review focused on my issues with Hay House promotional tactics and the numerous "professional" reviews that, I thought, went way overboard in lauding the contributions of this book. In fairness to the author however, I did review her book more closely and I'm rewriting my review to reflect that. However in a nutshell, I would say to Hay House and others helping to promote new books: Please review your promotional strategies. We, who love your work and mission, view some of the strategies as promotional fluff at best and deception at worst. They are actually turning off some of your customer base, so please rethink how to promote and market your books to the spiritually inclined and attuned audience you are targeting. You can also read the comments responding to the original review for more on this.

As for Peggy McColl's book, I read through it quickly and here's my thinking. The book is a fine treatment of the role emotions play in our lives. I tried to revise my review to three stars but was unable to do so. This book would be helpful for those who have not read widely on this topic. However, if you've read any of the Hicks books (particularly Ask and It is Given or Deliberate Creation) or "Excuse me your life is waiting" by Lynn Grabhorn, or any other book that talks about how important it is to be in emotional alignment with the experiences you want to bring into your life, I fear this book will be a bit redundant. However, I do think the book is better written then the Grabhorn book so it might be of value to those who weren't in sync with Grabhorn's writing style.

Buyer beware... can anyone say CONFLICT OF INTEREST??

Over half of the reviews posted as of today were written by people being promoted by the sale of this book!! Reviewers such as Randy Gilbert, Warren Whitlock, Teresa Bolen, Bob Burg, Barbara Rose, and Eldon Taylor are all part of a promotion Hay House (the publisher) is running! Two others shamelessly plugged their own books as part of their reviews and another guy actually works for the author!!

Do any of you realize that those of us who utilize the Amazon review system depend on it to make our buying choices based on its OBJECTIVITY?? Especially books related to Self-Help and Personal Growth/Development! C'mon! It's not supposed to be whoever has the most contacts willing to sell themselves out wins! We are here searching for advice, hoping to find guidance from real people with real life experience and opinions to share.

Peggy McColl's book may very well be as good as they all say. Who knows? But after coming here looking for help to try and make a decision about it and discovering example after example of blatant self-promotion instead, I for one am certainly no longer willing to make the leap of faith necessary to find out.

Stanley L. Sclove is a professor of statistics in the Department of Information and Decision Sciences of the College of Business Administration at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). His areas of specialization within statistics include multivariate statistical analysis, cluster analysis, time series analysis, and model selection criteria. Dr. Sclove’s research interests include time series segmentation and regime switching via Markov models. He is an officer of the Classification Society and the Section of Risk Analysis of the American Statistical Association.

About the Author

Allen R. Angel received his AAS in Electrical Technology from New York City Community College. He then received his BS in Physics and his MS in Mathematics from SUNY at New Paltz, and he took additional graduate work at Rutgers University. He is Professor Emeritus at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York where he served for many years as the chair of the Mathematics Department. He also served as the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at Rutgers University from 1967–73. He served as the President of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) and the Northeast Vice President of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). He is the recipient of many awards including a number of NISOD Excellence in Teaching Awards, NYSMATYC's Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award, and AMATYC's President Award. Allen enjoy tennis, worldwide travel, and visiting with his children and granddaughter.

Dennis Runde received his BS and MS in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin—Platteville and Milwaukee, respectively. He has a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of South Florida. He has been teaching�for twenty years at State College of Florida, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties and for ten years�at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School. 8th edition of this book

This book is an assigned book at MCC for the 098 Math course. Likewise the Intermediate book by this same author is for their 104 Math Course. This comes as no suprise since the author was the head of the mathematics department many years ago at MCC.

This review is for the Elementary Algebra book

This book has too much going on it. It is very confusing. Visually its like they spent time trying to make it look good versus giving you the information you require to do math correctly. The overusage of colors throughout the book makes it very distracting to the reader. Many things are in orange, yellow and blue making it very distracting with all of the callouts it the equivalent of an obstacle course in a textbook.

Many of the examples shown in the book lack critical information needed to complete all the problems at the end of the section. For instance in some of the examples they will show you how to do a certain problem, for example say x 1/2 +8x - y. In the examples they do not explain what to do when you have a variable in front of a fraction on a problem such as this. Their is no place to reference it. So this book only partially teaches you what you need to know. As you go through the section questions you will find that many of the questions do not have examples that can even be remotely used as a basis for what to do with the problem you are trying to solve. The book does not take a logical approach either.

I find that the book also has issues where what they are asking you questions on isn't taught until the next section which makes me ask if you havent been taught something yet how can you possibly answer it. This only further leads to anxiety over math.

Many times the teachers will tell you to get the student solution manual if you do not understand the book. This is an added cost and I believe a way for the book publisher to make more money along with the college. If you buy a book to learn from it should be written well enough that you should not need a seperate book. Also if all the information was contained in the book like it should be, you should also not need the solution manual.

The older versions of this book may have been better but the 8th edition is a disaster. The videos they reference in the book are from several years ago and have not been updated to reflect the examples in the book (where they have a camera icon). These icons are used to show the reader that their is a video for that particular math problem.

Perfect book to reintroduce algebra

I used this book in my first back-to-college algebra class, and it is a great book. Easy to understand explanations and step-by-step instructions made algebra way easier than I remembered! Please note: the companion solutions manual has many wrong answers. The book itself, however, is great. If your class is using this book, you will do well.

Mr. Paul R. Finch is an independent researcher residing in central Florida. He was once a member of the Worldwide Church of God during the time when many of these issues were being brought up in the 1970's. Mr. Finch wrote his first paper on the Passover in 1975, and has been accumulating data on the subject ever since. As an insider, his background well suits him to deal with this ever complex subject from the perspective of one who has witnessed first hand one of the biggest controversies in all of Christianity.

Paul R.Finch's controversial The Passover Papers: Controversy, Myth, Fairy Tales, and Nonsense is likely to either dazzle you or offend you depending on your beliefs and perhaps even your religion.

Finch is an independent researcher who for twenty years beginning in the 1970s was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. The book is based upon an essay that Finch originally submitted in 1975 to the Doctrinal Committee of the Worldwide Church of God in Pasadena under the title "The Old Testament Passover-A Study of its Time Element." Originally it addressed the meaning of the phrase "ben ha-arbayim" as being mid-afternoon. The primary objective of the essay was the hope that the Church would address the matter of the Passover time element. After two years, there was a report issued that agreed with Finch's conclusion however its leader, Herbert W. Armstrong and the "old guard" ministry rejected it. Armstrong, as well as others, was of the strong belief that the Jewish people had erred pertaining to the date of Passover and he was quite adamant in declaring that Passover should begin at the end of the Hebrew month of Nisan 13/14 rather than Nisan 14/15. In addition, Finch informs us in the Preface that that there exists certain religious groups that maintain that Easter is pagan and that true Christians should instead be partaking in the "Christian Passover."

As a side note, for those of you who are not familiar with Passover it should be mentioned that it is one of the primary Jewish Holy Days and its roots can be traced to three millennia when the Israelites were miraculously delivered from enslavement in Egypt. There is however a counterpart in Orthodox Christianity with Holy Day, Easter, which commemorates the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Passover looks forward to the ultimate sacrifice of the Lamb of God, whereas Easter ostensibly looks back to its fulfillment in the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. As Finch mentions, without doubt the Exodus of Israel from Egyptian bondage and the death and Resurrection of Jesus both of which are tied to Passover should have been the common source of inspiration for both Judaism and Christianity, however, such is not the case as it has come be a major bone of contention, strife, and division among both Jews and Christians for centuries and still is to this very day. Much of the debate centers on the time element of Passover. When does it actually begin? And did Jesus in fact keep the Passover on the last night of his life?

Finch informs us that the significant question in his study is to resolve why we cannot come to a common understanding of the facts? It is his hope that "the study will lead us to a new appreciation of the problems involved and rediscovery of many overlooked facts and false theories that have traditionally surrounded the subject." In trying to better comprehend the problem and its importance, the author hopes that it will also be beneficial in enlightening us on a number of biblical issues. In essence, the book endeavours to resolve the age old debate on the time element of Passover with some new insights on the Sabbath and the early Church controversies as well as the chronology of Passion week that are essential to the overall problem. As Finch mentions in his conclusion, a far more relevant issue is that we must not ignore the methodology that has been used by the adherents of the 13/14 Nisan theory that he claims to be chicanery rather than hard evidence.

Relying on extensive research as well as the teachings of the New and Old Testaments as well as the Gospel, Finch takes pains to present compelling arguments that are contained within twenty chapters covering the various divergence of opinions associated with the debate including the Quartodeciman Controversy, if controversy existed among Jews, the meaning of Passover, was the Last Supper a Passover Meal, the Passion Week and its chronology, the day of the week of the Crucifixion, the hour Jesus was crucified, did Jesus spend a night in jail, the time element factors according to the Hebrew Scriptures, the meaning of the Hebrew Verb "Pasach," the population of Exodus, and an appendix discussing why the Early Church fasted on Passover.

Finch concludes that much of the problem hinges on the "true method of how the Bible originally counted days. Days were counted from sunrise-to-sunrise, which makes more sense than a sunset-to-sunset day." And according to Finch, this simple truth solves the problem thus leading Finch to be quite convinced from his historical and biblical research that Jesus' final meal was an ordinary meal the night before Passover- the night before he was betrayed.

With all due respect to Finch and the tremendous amount of research he has devoted to the subject matter, the nagging problem I have with his arguments is that for the most part there is a tendency to interconnect biblical and empirical evidence. Can we place biblical evidence on the same plateau as empirical evidence? Playing the devil's advocate, what if you don't accept the teachings of the Gospel, the New and Old Testaments? Moreover, what if you refuse to accept the Bible as absolute, true and without error and that many of the characters in the Bible are fictitious and are inventions of the ancient Hebrew scribes? Are we to conclude that these individuals are wrong and that Finch is correct? In other words, there are more questions than answers.

Although, The Passover Papers: Controversy, Myth, Fairy Tales, and Nonsense is not always easy to read with its abundance of information, you will probably stick with it particularly that it is interesting and fascinating. And its extensive bibliography will also take serious students as far as they wish to go. Furthermore, as mentioned in the first chapter of the book and one that I whole heartedly concur, it does explore many questions which will no doubt have the benefit of illuminating a number of controversial subjects that will appeal to readers interested in a good old fashion biblical study. In other words, there is plenty here to sink your teeth into and ponder over.

This book will grow your business fast.

Full of fresh money-making methods, not dinosaur-age, old ideas that you've heard a million times. Yes, it is possible today to become a millionaire in this industry with the techniques in this book. I like reading networking books, but they usually preach tired, old techniques that make the reader work extremely hard and look and sound like a geek when he tries them out. Nothing tired in this book -- just exactly what works today -- the stuff Wes and his students are cashing in on to make ridiculous money. Thank you Wes for making this book and taking the work out of network marketing.

In an industry that is notorious for the high rate of "failure" and only the "few" that really make the big$$$, Wes is able to tell the truth in a simple, elegant and humble manner. There is no "secret sauce" that so many run around and look for. Yes, the industry has changed over the years as have most others and Wes tells it like it is. A must read for the serious about having fun while working from home and generating an income not just sufficient to survive on but to thrive on. Most certainly a page turner!!

Incredible content! While most people have a misconception that network marketing does not work, Wes Melcher proves them wrong. People fail because they make it like a job or work. Wes does an amazing job on teaching how to make keep it simple! His information on social media is phenomenal and will help me better my business. All in all, not only does it show how an average person can win, but how an experienced network marketer can take their business to a whole other level! I'd recommend this book to anyone period! Fabulous Text for Beginners or as a Review

This is a wonderful text for those wishing to improve their vocabularies and comprehension. Especially focussed for those entering the medical field, it is of value to all. Don't let the title make you think it isn't accessible - it is easy to use. Buy this book, and a LOT of 3x5 cards, and you won't regret it.

"This is an incredible book!"

There are many, many books on scientific terminology out there, and in my mind, this is one of the best.It covers all of the standard greek and latin bases and combining forms. (the other book that I would recommend) is a good book on root words and combining forms such as,Donald.J.Borrors dictionary of root words and combining forms-if I have gotten the title wrong, just search Donald.J.Borror and I am sure it will be rectified.
This book is basically a book on biology. It covers plant,animal, and human anatomy.There are many, many, lessons in this book,and as I said formerly,I think that it would be a good investment to purchase a dictionary of greek and latin root word constituents and their various forms in order to do a thorough etymological study of it.
That said, and I know that I have been rambling, it is a worthwhile book. I would suggest this book to any biology,medical,etymology, or lover of words. It will increase your vocabulary and understanding of life ten-fold.

This is not a dictionary....

which is what I was looking for. It was hard to tell from the sample pages and reviews that this is not an etymology book. However, it is a very nice, self directed course in Greek and Latin roots and prefixes. Although this is not really what I wanted, I have grown quite fond of it and would recommend it for someone looking to learn where our words came from and their meanings. This will not replace an etymology book or dictionary.
