Great, just wish there was a PDF version...

Got this as part of the Jeppesen Part 61 Private Pilot kit, it is a great reference for all of the major maneuvers you need to perform, both on the ground and in the air (and in between!) It simplifies each maneuver down into the very basics and tells you what to do, what to keep an eye on, etc, all along the way. My one issue is that Jeppesen doesn't offer this in an electronic format. I would love to have access to this on my iPad Mini that I always fly with rather than lugging this around.

I prefer Jeppesen texts to others, they are very detailed, a touch generalized, but right on the mark. They are written in such a manner to make it understandable to beginner pilots or aviators, but also detailed and informative enough for the experienced pilot. All of Jeppesen's texts are worth a read if you're serious about Aviation.

Hands down this is the best private pilot ground school "all in one" book. Don't even waste your time on anything else. It is amazingly well writtent and clear with information that most other manuals leave out entirely! This is a no brainer, worth double the cost.

Very disappointed, particularly given the price

I generally agree with the first reviewer that this book describes the "basic theory in a simple way." For me, it was entirely too basic, even simplistic. I was very disappointed to pay this price to learn that edges of planes are lines or that planes together define a space. I was also disappointed to see that most of the landscape imagery was black and white with rather weak contrast. There are a few color plates at the end of the book but way too few.

If you want a coffee table quality book on the subject, the kind worth nearly $200, look elsewhere. If you want a solid foundational text on the elements of visual design in landscape, ditto. I am an avid lover of mountain terrains (face-to-face, in art, and even in CG creations) but I have no expertise in forestry, land management, or landscape architecture. Maybe I am missing the subtleties.

Big words for dummies

I regret buying this book. No, it's not the money that I paid, I regret the time I spent trying to see if there was something that I could learn in it.

The book is a LOT of verbiage and adjectives. "Massive" or "scalable" finds its place in almost every page. In one page, I found 5 instances of "massive". Here is another extreme example: "Sparse, distributed, persistent multidimensional sorted map." There are at least three occurrences of that exact phrase.

If you want echo the hype that Big Data is great and learn all the jargon that is used in it, this book is for you. If you want to know why, or get down to fundamentals, skip it. There are typos (eg, [...] and factual inaccuracies (eg, the definition of unstructured data.) There are also completely incomprehensible examples under the garb of "code".

The book says little more than "Big Data is lot of data, you got to deal with it bit by bit". And it takes quite a few words to say that. It has no depth. Even when reading the last chapter, you feel that you're reading the introduction.

Glib, rambling and incoherent

First, my background: I am a data and software architect at a company that produces software to handle very large quantities of scientific data. I picked this book up to see if it were worth recommending to other people at my company. (spoiler: it is not)

This book uses a lot of words to say very little and what it does say is often either incomplete to the point of uselessness or flat out wrong. The text is full of buzzwords and jargon, often used incorrectly. The figures are laughably useless (see figure 3-2 for a GREAT example). I think that the problem might be that Hurwitz and co. are business consultants and possibly in the habit of creating poorly researched, content-free, and buzzword-heavy prose for people with a limited depth of knowledge.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. Well, maybe I'd recommend it as a great example of very bad technical writing, but that's about it. I have no idea how other people are giving this five stars. Perhaps they are sockpuppet accounts.

Sadly, I don't know of a good introduction to the myriad of technologies that falls into the "big data" category. Such a book would be difficult to write well since it would have to make many complicated topics understandable to a novice.

content good, but WAY too many typos in code samples

I bought this looking for a good, cheap PL/SQL reference guide. I was happy to see the subject matter covered thoroughly but quickly, assuming basic knowledge of both general programing language constructs and SQL.

On the other hand, many (OK, not a majority or anything, but enough to significantly annoy me) of the code samples include blatant typos. I have not gone looking for the actual downloadable code what goes with the book, so it is possible the typos were fixed there.
