another Wickham gem

This is the story of three professional women who work in London and meet once a month for cocktails and a bitch-and-moan session. You'd think they'd tell each other *everything*, but each woman has a secret -- one is ashamed of a family secret, one is in a long term relationship with a married man and one exudes confidence and strength even though she's filled with doubts about her decision to quit her job and stay home with her impending child. If it sounds like a trite and predictable plot, that's when you must consider the talents of the author. Wickham is an extraordinary storyteller. Her dialogue is effortless and her characters more interesting than the total populations of ten romance novels. I pick up a Wickham novel (or other works under the name Sophie Kinsella) when I want a fun, easy read --and I don't mean that pejoratively. Wickham's prose flows delightfully and pages are turned and time flows in reading bliss. I enjoyed each moment with these flawed but genuine women and their acquaintances. Plus, there are ALWAYS moments when I guffaw out loud at some utterance or situation. Very enjoyable reading.

If you're familiar with Wickham/Kinsella, you won't be disappointed. If you're new to her, it's definitely worth your time to give her a try.

What a disappointment!

What a disappointment! I feel I've wasted my time reading this. I love Sophie Kinsella's books and so was excited to find she'd written more. The review of Cocktails for Three was great; it looked like it would be a fun romp of a book. Instead, it was quite a slow read, the characters were not well developed, and I didn't really care about any of them. I felt the story ended rather abruptly. I'd never have known this was written by SK. That said, don't forego her Shopaholic series or the other books she's written. They are definitely fun! I have read and enjoyed all of them.

Cocktails are Wonderful!

This is the 3rd book that I have read by the author. The book was amazing. I loved it. The characters were all relatible (especially for me, Candice) and the settings in the book were fantastic (especially Cyprus). The story had a great storyline and also great things to take away from (such as sticking to your true friends, rely on help when needed, and steer clear of dating your boss or people you may work with that may cause friction later on). Overall, this is a relatible work for a lot of readers out there and definetly worth reading. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get upset, and you'll love the characters and the book. I am looking forward to reading the next one on my list by the author.

Three University Texts on Economic Growth

"Economic growth" continues to be of interest largely because of the large part of humanity whose living standards are so very substantially worse than the middle-class norm of OECD countries. Economists are as interested as anyone else, whence university texts full of economists' economic growth research:

-- Acemoglu, "Introduction to Modern Economic Growth" (2009)
-- Aghion and Howitt, "The Economics of Growth" (2009)
-- Weil, "Economic Growth" (2nd ed., 2009)

As a Ph.D. economist who has resided and worked for the past thirty years in low-income areas of several continents, in countries of which the wealthiest was Egypt, "Economic Growth" is a daily interest. How does the enterprise sector relate to what attracts our attention to low-income countries in the first place: hunger, physical insecurity, abusive social relations? Does it pass these problems by, or does it alleviate them? Should interested outsiders care about "the economy" and if so what should they do? Or should they concentrate on relief, or on political reform?

This review of the three texts listed above looks at them from the point of view of their usefulness in relation to this particular interest.

Although Weil's undergraduate text stays away from the mathematics that dominate the other two, all three books are quite similar in that each is an encyclopedic exposition of models of aggregate growth, along with numerous factors that have been suggested to affect it. None is a monograph that states and defends a thesis. They all prepare a student to grapple with problems in the hope that the students will solve them.

Perhaps that is the fate of a textbook: anything more assertive would be commercially limiting.

Nonetheless, the result is a certain defensiveness. The task of the two graduate texts in particular seems to be to demonstrate that, if observation of low-income countries or of growth should give rise to an idea, then the economics profession can model it.

This is not to say that the authors haven't had ideas. But none of these texts is a handbook of things to be done: how to create economic growth or improve its quality. The implication, unfortunately, is that the authors don't have that toolkit to offer. (The graduate texts are, however, handbooks on how to model.)

The reader will learn quite a bit about the world from Weil's book, which is more descriptive than the other two. Aghion and Howitt's is immensely learned, but Acemoglu's book stands out in a couple ways. First, it is the only one to cross the line and become an applied mathematics textbook pure and simple. Secondly, however, its great length affords space for an "Epilogue," an explicit outlier that contains some non-mathematical statements. And it's here where I can pin-point what seems to me to be the underlying methodological limitation.

Acemoglu says about Chinese history, on page 867 (!): "When prospects for economic growth conflicted with political stability, the elite opted for maintaining stability, even if this came at the expense of potential economic growth. Thus China tightly controlled ... ."

Let me state the principle that is illustrated here but that Acemoglu has perhaps overlooked: Things don't happen for causes. Things happen because people do them.

If things happened for causes, then we might indeed model cause and effect -- and probably conclude that that's all we could do.

But all the models and history are after the fact. If the fact were different, we'd be modeling that instead. And it always might have been different. China's history, in point of fact, finally did read: "Even though the measures required for economic growth conflicted with political stability, the elite found a way to take the measures and preserve political structures, resulting in massive benefits that ultimately were both economic and political." China's elite might very well have done this at any time; it's not for us to say that they couldn't have.

Acemoglu overlooked this principle of action in the section on pp. 868-70 about Western Europe's growth after 1800. He says that two things were different in the pre-1800 period: no systematic investment in human capital, and the presence of "authoritarian" political regimes. But he then ignores investment in human capital in his story of the post-1800 period.

This is a fatal error. People make the political institutions what they are, make the families what they are, and make the firms what they are. "Things happen because people do them."

People who bring about change do not drop from outer space; they "distill their frenzy" from somewhere, and it's usually from an intellectual outlook they encountered in schools and universities.

If we hope low-income countries' enterprises will become more world class, their owners and managers must have this as their vision. If we hope that international standards of human rights will prevail, then social leaders must have that as their vision. And if we hope that Total Factor Productivity will rise in low-income countries, it is people who will make that happen.

It is actually a bit odd that all three texts should tell the basic story whose thread runs through savings, capital accumulation, TFP, and innovation without tackling what Acemoglu calls (p. 873) "the industrial organization of innovation." I give Acemoglu credit for this excellent term.

Surely the industrial organization of innovation would include universities investing in human capital, but perhaps this kind of investment will have to have happened more widely in low-income countries before it's modeled.

I conclude by reiterating that each of these three texts is encyclopedic and extremely impressive.

economic growth brilliantly explained

This is a marvellous book. eminently didactic, up-to-date and very well structured. I finished a graduate degree in economics ober 25 years ago and wanted to go over some book/articles on the theory of economic growth, most of which I had forgotten. This book certainly fit the bill.
The author begins with a heuristic structure which describes in stylized form the problem of economic growth: why some countries grow more than others, and why income per capita is higher in some countries. He then explains the Cobb-Douglas production function and the Solow model in stylized form, and applies these one-by-one to each of the factors which influence differences in growth: capital, labor, productivity, etc. He devotes a significant portion of the text to the theme of productivity, and one or two chapters to the influence of technology on growth, a theme which has much relevance in the modern economic context.
The required mathematics is included, but is kept to a minimum, so that the book is not cluttered with lenghty, but unnecessary proofs. These are left to appendices in the text and on the website which is included with the book. The formulae ( about two or three pages per chapter ) clarify in mathematical notation many pages of explanation in the text, and are well developed. However, the author provides many vignettes with concrete examples, and much of the text draws from factual economic history. He also uses scattergrams to explain relations between economic variables rather than regression equations, which make the text easier to swallow.
A very well-rounded text, highly readable, yet with sufficient rigor, with lots of exercises and problems to be solved for those interested in applying it in a classroom or course. For those interested in the subject of economic growth, whether student or professional, it would be hard to find a better book.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic of economic growth. It is understandable to a lay person and kept lively by the author's heavy use of up to date and interesting facts.

One thing that sticks out is that the US in in an enviable position worldwide. I guess I should have known that, but it is easy to get caught up in pessimism. The US is at the cutting edge of productivity per capita which is a much harder task to raise than countries that can do catch up growth. For some reason raising productivity per capita at the cutting edge is harder than it was in the post WWII boom era, but that isn't americas unique problem.

A Masterpiece

In "I'll Steal You Away" Ammaniti gives us two intersecting tales of people trying to escape the deadness and brutality of Italian provincial life, interspersing these stories with cameos, walk ons and diversions from a range of hilariously drawn characters.

And whilst I would agree that the one of these narrative threads - the story of Graziano Biglia, ageing Lothario and charicature of the Latin stud, desperately trying to conjure up a respectable future as the local boy made good, whilst being led by the nose by the skittish, gold digging nude dancer Erica - is frequently hilarious, embarrasingly well observed, and always diverting, ultimately this is an entertainment. Such a cartoon is Biglia, that it is hard to be anything other than amused by his sufferings, or those of Flora, drawn reluctantly into his web thanks to the inhibition-lowering effects of MDMA.

But in his other narrative thread, Ammaniti has created one of the great adoloscent characters in literature. I challenge anyone who had a less than perfect childhood - and that's most of us - not to relate strongly to Pietro Moroni. Pietro, 12 years old but small for his age, struggles with a dysfunctional family dominated by an abusive alcoholic father and with bullying and victimisation from the local toughs. His only salvation comes from being the best friend and soulmate of Gloria, the most beautiful and feisty girl in town. But as Pietro hits adolescence that plank is also becoming shaky, as friendship starts to turn into something else, with all the uncertainties and fears that brings.

Pietro is swept along on a wave of events that he has no way of controlling, let down by all the adults in his life, only able to turn to the always supportive, but not always wise, Gloria. Ultimately, as his narrative crosses paths with that of Biglia, he takes a series of unpredictable and shocking actions to take control of his life.

A book that can be hilarious, picaresque, and profound simultaneously is a rare thing indeed - and Pietro and Gloria's story in particular will stay with you for a long time. And for anyone who remembers the fear, pain, occasional rapture and general heightening of the senses of your first love / first crush, this book will stir up feelings and memories you've long forgotten.

Deliberately or not, Ammaniti has left plenty of room for a sequel and personally I hope he writes it. But for now, I heartily recommend this book to anyone with a heart.

Heat in a small town

Niccolo Ammaniti's "new" book, "I'll Steal You Away" is a melange of small but very passionate vignettes concerning a cross section of people in Ischiano Scalo, an Italian Peyton Place. His protagonists are one Pietro Moroni, an uncertain pre-teen who carries the responsibility of the world on his shoulders and Graziano Biglia, a forty-something ne'er-do-well. Their lives are largely connected with Flora Palmieri, a local school teacher on whom Pietro seeks revenge for failing him at school and with whom Graziano has a whirlwind courtship lasting one night.

I'll Steal You Away" is "new" in the sense that it was written before his wonderful 2003 book, "I'm Not Scared" (after which a gratifying movie was made) and translated by Jonathan Hunt (no relation to me) earlier this year. Ammaniti's attention to detail and his often graphic descriptions of characters in sensual scenes are in abundance in "I'll Steal You Away". He knows how to tell a story. However, this earlier book suffers from being too long where "I'm Not Scared" was of an apt length. While one of the aims of the book is to transfer a sense of worth and power to Pietro from Graziano during an encounter where the youngster is being attacked by his peers and Graziano comes to Pietro's aid, it nonetheless takes almost the entire length of the book to get to that point.

Hunt's very British translation makes for a fun sidelight (at least for American readers!) but Ammaniti shines in the force of his narrative delivery. It's a good book but some editing would have made "I'll Steal You Away" an even better one.

Not his best, but with good bits

Early (1999) third novel by Niccol� Ammaniti (NA), who won great praise for his second, `I'm not Afraid', which was made into an awards-winning movie. This reader has read (only) five of NA's books and finds this creation his least. Why? NA's second novel about a 9-year old showed him to be a great writer about the mindset of growing-up children. He may not have wanted to write another such book that would be criticized as a repetition, sequel, or whatever. So, in this book Pietro (12), unhappy at home and bullied at school, is one of a few believable characters of a farce. His best friend is privileged Gloria, too cute for words. NA joins him precariously with a co-star, Graziano Biglia (44), a carefree playboy, musician, globetrotter, erotic champion, who when forced to choose, always makes the wrong decision. Pietro and Graziano meet briefly, late in the novel... Why? Because they hail from the same coastal village NW of Rome.
The first half of this novel is full of bad jokes, superlatives, clich�s, prejudices, crude language and ugly violence. And references to Italian sing-along's, TV programs and -stars and English-language music and movies. Throughout the novel, the texts written in italics are a bonus to readers: they contain the thoughts of the main characters when under great pressure, in mortal fear.
Only after 250 pp a dramatic structure becomes evident. By then many readers may have given up. Persistent readers are rewarded by a satisfactory and dramatic ending. In an interview on internet, the author expressed his joy and satisfaction about writing this book. But he doubted that it could become a movie...
Overlong and full of bad taste, but altogether, a brilliant portrayal of a quiet child somehow driven to commit crimes. With 100-150 pp less, it would have been a better book.
