Maggie, Roxanne and Candice, the heroines of Wickham's latest Brit romp, are three successful women in their early 30s working in the editorial office of the Londoner, a magazine enjoying a circulation renaissance. They meet on the first of every month at the Manhattan Bar, a posh lounge that caters to clientele sporting Prada bags. There, Wickham serves up a healthy dose of good-natured witticisms mixed with biting retorts as the trio bonds over adultery, pregnancy jitters and guilt. Freelancer Roxanne secretly dates an unknown referred to by the women as Mr. Married while jet-setting to Cypress and other foreign locales on a regular basis. Meanwhile, Maggie's stuck at home in the country on pregnancy leave from her position as editor. It is kindhearted reporter Candice, however, who is in for serious trouble. When she recognizes a waitress at the Manhattan Bar as Heather Trelawney, whose family was ruined by Candice's father, Candice decides to make amends. When Heather applies for a job as editorial assistant at the magazine, Candice supplies her with a writing sample of her own, landing her a job over 300 other applicants. Not heeding her friends' advice to leave well enough alone, Candice continues to extend herself beyond normal bounds of generosity and is surprised to discover in the end she's been duped and betrayed by Heather. In a predictable climax, Wickham delivers a nicely sewn up ending with each of the character's problems resolved, although none all that happily. Readers desiring a chatty, neatly told tale will be delighted by the author's deft handling of character development and drama.

Take three successful career women, the urbane world of London publishing, add friendship, then shake and serve this story in a cocktail glass with a slice of secrets as a garnish, and call the concoction Cocktails for Three. another Wickham gem
By audrey frances
This is the story of three professional women who work in London and meet once a month for cocktails and a bitch-and-moan session. You'd think they'd tell each other *everything*, but each woman has a secret -- one is ashamed of a family secret, one is in a long term relationship with a married man and one exudes confidence and strength even though she's filled with doubts about her decision to quit her job and stay home with her impending child. If it sounds like a trite and predictable plot, that's when you must consider the talents of the author. Wickham is an extraordinary storyteller. Her dialogue is effortless and her characters more interesting than the total populations of ten romance novels. I pick up a Wickham novel (or other works under the name Sophie Kinsella) when I want a fun, easy read --and I don't mean that pejoratively. Wickham's prose flows delightfully and pages are turned and time flows in reading bliss. I enjoyed each moment with these flawed but genuine women and their acquaintances. Plus, there are ALWAYS moments when I guffaw out loud at some utterance or situation. Very enjoyable reading.
If you're familiar with Wickham/Kinsella, you won't be disappointed. If you're new to her, it's definitely worth your time to give her a try.

What a disappointment!

What a disappointment! I feel I've wasted my time reading this. I love Sophie Kinsella's books and so was excited to find she'd written more. The review of Cocktails for Three was great; it looked like it would be a fun romp of a book. Instead, it was quite a slow read, the characters were not well developed, and I didn't really care about any of them. I felt the story ended rather abruptly. I'd never have known this was written by SK. That said, don't forego her Shopaholic series or the other books she's written. They are definitely fun! I have read and enjoyed all of them.

Cocktails are Wonderful!
By Sandeen
This is the 3rd book that I have read by the author. The book was amazing. I loved it. The characters were all relatible (especially for me, Candice) and the settings in the book were fantastic (especially Cyprus). The story had a great storyline and also great things to take away from (such as sticking to your true friends, rely on help when needed, and steer clear of dating your boss or people you may work with that may cause friction later on). Overall, this is a relatible work for a lot of readers out there and definetly worth reading. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get upset, and you'll love the characters and the book. I am looking forward to reading the next one on my list by the author.
