About the Author

A little "too abridged"?

Having just been mesmerized by my exposure to Indian literature through Ramesh Menon's outstanding version of the Ramayana, I looked to continue my journey through this corner of the literary world by reading the Mahabharata. Unlike the Ramayana and the Bhagavad Gita (which I intend to read next), no version of this tale jumped out at me on my perusal through Amazon reviews. I decided to give Narayan's version a shot due to name recognition and popularity. Having just finished the tale, I have mixed emotions. On the one hand, I found the story itself to be interesting and Narayan's prose to be quite readable; on the other, I felt like I just scratched the surface of this great tale. I typically avoid abridgments, and should've known better than to think that an epic could be reduced to a mere 190-some pages, but I was truly disappointed by the abbreviated nature of this version. After relishing the richness of Menon's Ramayana, I felt like this version captured neither the rich grandeur needed to appreciate the scale of the epic nor gave the attention necessary to allow the reader to dwell on the deeper philosophical points. Because unlike the Ramayana, which was truly an archetypal "good versus evil" struggle, the Mahabharata is full of interesting moral wrinkles because it keeps the battle in the family. Brother fights brother and protege fights mentor, as several generations of this family are involved. Although the Kauravas (and Duryodhana in particular) are cast as the instigator and oppressor, I cannot fully disagree when Duryodhana gives his side of the story or when Yudhistira has his misgivings both before and after the war. Most emotionally and philosophically poignant are the doubts of the stoic and brave Arjuna as the families are at the brink of war. More so than the battle itself it was these moral and philosophical issues that I found most interesting.

Fortunately, it is my understanding that the conversation between Arjuna and Krishna (which consists of only a paragraph or two in this version of the Mahabharata) comprises the bulk of the Bhagavad Gita, which I am immensely excited to read next. As for the Mahabharata itself, Narayan's version gave me a bare bones introduction ... but I will need to revisit this tale through a different version to truly feel well-versed in the epic. As other reviews state, read Narayan for a very basic introduction to the story. However, overall it felt a little "too abridged" to do either the story or the moral underpinnings of the story the justice they deserve.

An impossible task made passible...(3.5 stars)

Reducing the Mahabharata to a digestible narrative is VERY difficult (the poem being about 8 times longer than the Iliad and Odyssey combined). However, Narayan has done a nice job in his attempt, and a text that would otherwise be almost totally inaccessible due to its daunting size, is made thus accessible. So, job well done on that score. However, so much is left out, elided or smoothed over that it's hard to really make use of the text as a means of understanding the Mahabharata's epic style and points of interest. If you want to simply acquaint yourself with the overall basic (but still incomplete) narrative then this is a reasonable option, but if you want to enter the world of the Mahabharata on a level anywhere approaching its cognate Greek cousins - this is woefully incomplete. For that purpose I would begin looking at Narasimha's work and that of J.D. Smith. If you REALLY want to enter this world there is the still incomplete Chicago translation, the Clay Sanskrit Library rendering (also still incomplete and not based on the critical edition), or the, again still incomplete (but moving faster than the rest), rendering by Bibek Debroy.

Beautiful book

I'm reading this for class, but I have to say that I actually enjoyed this novel! Usually, I cringe at the types of books required for each class, but this one was a delight. The characters are aplenty, but each one is unique and implicitly complex. The plot about two families fighting for rule will have you nonstop reading, waiting to find out who conquers!

Well worth the buy!

I am an RN who has worked many years of a 30 year career with traumatized children, as well as adults. Bruce Perry never, ever disappoints. I began reading his work in the 90's and following him through the original Child Trauma site and have learned more than I could ever express in words. The change he seeks- the change we seek and need in working with traumatized children/persons, like most change, is a long, long time in coming. But progress is being made. Bruce D. Perry will always be one of my real heroes.

Childhood Reflected

A wonderful collection of ruminations based on Clinical Experince and some penetrating Philosophical musings. This book will withstand multiple readings over a lifetime and will always feel fresh. It is very accessible and concise, the readings being gleaned from many sources. This is a book to keep to hand for many years ahead.

Great book for specific projects in book & used elsewhere.

Great book full of color photos for the specific projects in this book. There are instructions on how to make a dollhouse or diorama from a simple shoe box to a wood room box. The instructions are specific to the projects listed, but the items can be used in any project. It is a useful, informative book for the miniaturist. In fact, there are a couple of projects that I aspire to make one day.
Everything is for 1:12, 1" scale. Some of the projects you can make are the Sitting Room, and the Bedroom in shoe box rooms; a mermaid in a fish bowl; vignettes of The Night Before Christmas, and The Dollmaker's Workroom; room boxes and dioramas for The Secret Garden, Sunday Morning in the Potting Shed, the Attic, The Edwardian Lady's Bedroom and The Farmhouse Kitchen. Great price. Just a caution, I bought two books by this author with different titles and different cover art, but inside they are the same book. The price was so good it's not logical to send one back, so I'll donate one to the miniature group I've joined.

If you write, you NEED this book.

When I'm not writing, I'm editing. I'm a contract editor for a publisher. I also edit for friends and friends of friends in between assignments, and in between those assignments and requests, I edit myself. One thing editing has taught me is to be hyperaware of not making the same mistakes as the writers that I'm editing. While my job is primarily about spotting continuity errors, applying duct tape to plot holes and fact checking, I also try to clean up the grammar and punctuation as much as I can.

I've had many writers tell me that they do not remember how to properly use commas and other punctuation marks. I've had some tell me that expecting them to use them between independent clauses isn't required anymore--well it is. I've had others blink at me like a deer in the headlights when I tell them that a semicolon should be used instead when there is no conjunction.

I read books on grammar. It's part of my job. It's me making sure that I am not sending my editors a nightmare. You cannot trust Word to put a green line under all your grammatical errors, because when it comes to commas, Word is frequently wrong.

This little 99 cent book is wonderful. Grammar Girl breaks punctuation down in plain English, and she gets the message across about how it should be done with simple examples. Any one who writes or edits should buy this book. It will never leave my Kindle.

It has replaced English Simplified as my favorite book for punctuation and grammar, and not just because English Simplified is overpriced because it's a textbook. You don't feel like you're in English 101 with some grad student browbeating you for leaving out a comma with Grammar Girl's Punctuation 911. If you write, you can't afford not to buy and read this book.

Good, Fun Book to read -- Needs Navigation

This is a really great book, and a fun read. It covers the Boring subject of punctuation in a fun, easy to understand manner. It is very instructional and not the least bit "stuffy." Unfortunately, it really should have some sort of way to look up subjects! A simple `Table of Contents' would honestly help make finding a specific subject much easier. As it is, you will have to read through the entire book and add your own bookmarks. The Kindle's search function works, but is little help on a specific subject.
