Amitav Ghosh is the internationally bestselling author of Sea of Poppies (short-listed for the Man Booker Prize) and River of Smoke, the first two novels in the Ibis Trilogy, of which Flood of Fire is the final installment. An enthralling conclusion to the Ibis trilogy

Flood of Fire is a giant of a book and a fitting conclusion to the truly astonishing Ibis trilogy. It's an enthralling and exciting read, set against the backdrop of the standoff between East and West which led to the Opium Wars and the British acquisition of Hong Kong. The events resulted in China's capitulation and humiliation as it tried to prevent greedy, opportunistic foreigners from plying their cargoes of opium.
The narrative meanders with ease across the years, drawing together historic events, the main and various subplots and a vast array of colourful and compelling characters. The subject matter is sensitive. Colonialism is raging and Europeans are happy to exploit people for profit. Amitav Ghosh explores this and other difficult themes with compassion and without judgement. The reader is able to view events from the standpoint of various characters and form their own conclusion about the integrity or otherwise of some attitudes and actions.
Ghosh brings an incredible energy to his writing. There are so many stories and people to follow and every voice is different. Although much of the dialogue uses unfamiliar language and sentence structure, it's easy to follow and has a cadence that sweeps the reader along. I'm left feeling that I actually knew some of the people; Zachary, for example, a mixed race American is memorable. His dalliance with Mrs Burnham provides some of the best comic writing I've ever read. Ghosh also captures custom, conflict and intrigue. It's easy to relate to Kesri Singh, an incidental character in earlier volumes comes to the fore so that we can understand how and why he joined the Army, but at what cost?
There are so many strands at the start of this tale, it's difficult to see how they will all come together. But Ghosh's skill at pure storytelling is boundless. His research is meticulous and the bibliography alone gives some insight into why these books work so well. He hooks the reader and reels them in. I loved every page of this amazing story and didn't want it to end. What more can a reader ask?

Good, but not as great as Sea of Poppies

Amitav, does try to bring together the various strands of stories and characters from the first two books in this final part of the Ibis trilogy. But the effort shows, and the book suffers as a result of this.
The first book, Sea of Poppies, reveled in the pidgin English, especially Mr. Doughty who ironically being the most casually racist was also the most steeped in the language and ways of the natives; and the highly personal stories set against a well researched backdrop of opium farming in India, and it's destruction of farming and families in rural east India.
However, Amitav went into a complete tangent in the second book with new characters, and not very engaging stories (botanist in the east is no comparison to a fallen and disgraced raja).
In this book, in order to bring the characters together, he has to resort to a lot of 'hand of god' coincidences and spends laborious pages explaining and connecting the dots. This results in the book losing the brilliant pidgin English from the first book. Further it becomes in places a war strategy book, of which it does a good enough job, but loses in bargain the human stories and the wonderful language that made the first book unique.
I wish Amitav had built on the small set of characters from the Sea of Poppies, rather than getting too ambitious.

Flood of Fire is the third and final book in the Ibis Trilogy by Amitav Ghosh. Where readers of River of Smoke may have wondered what happened to the major players in Sea of Poppies, those questions are answered by Flood of Fire. Characters from both previous books reappear, along with new characters. Neel continues his account of events, much of it in the form of a journal. Zachary Reid has a narrative role, as do Kesri Singh, older brother of Deeti, and Shireen Moddie, widow of Bahram. Well into the tale, the voice of a young boy, Raju, is added.
While a newly exonerated but penniless Zachary tries to put his life back together, Neel uses his linguistic talents to help the Chinese war effort. Kesri heads a team of sepoys who form part of the fighting force on the English side, and Shireen heads to Canton in an attempt to gain compensation for Bahram’s lost opium cargo. Once again, the Ibis seems to draw the characters to her. As the Ibis, Anahita and Hind converge on the Pearl River Delta, many of the characters from Sea of Poppies and River of Smoke find themselves in close quarters.
Against a background of the battles of the First Opium War, Ghosh demonstrates the depth of research done (which he attributes to his ancestor) in the detail he provides on a multitude of topics: the composition of fighting forces involved in the wars, what comprised their uniforms, the important role of the army followers, the restrictions on travel into Canton, the power of translators, Victorian sex therapy, futures trading in the nineteenth century, and, of course, the Opium Wars. He includes a wealth of information in easily digestible form by weaving the facts into an absorbing tale full of interesting characters.
Ghosh also gives the reader plenty of humour: he subjects poor Zachary to all kinds of indignities and gives the reader plenty of laughs at his expense. Who knew there were so many euphemisms for sexual terms in Victorian times? Double entendre and innuendo abound. Reunions, too, are plentiful, some less friendly than others. There are dramatic battles, more than a few deaths, a marriage proposal, quite a bit of impersonation, some secret assignations, and an act of piracy. Characters develop, but not all for the better.
In his Epilogue, Ghosh explains that the story could continue, but having spent ten years on the trilogy thus far, and unwilling to abbreviate the tale as would not do it justice, he leaves it with, what no doubt many readers will feel, much unsaid. The final moments of the main story hold a delightful twist that will have many readers laughing out loud. At over six hundred pages, this may be a brick, but it is a brilliant read.
