About the Author
Ken Reid received his B.S. degree in computer and electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1988 and his M.S.E.E. degree in 1994 from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He was also one of the first in the nation to receive his Ph.D. in engineering education from Purdue University in 2009. Prior to beginning his teaching career in 1996, he worked for the U.S. Navy in electronics manufacturing research. In addition to publishing and presenting in the field, Dr. Reid has extensive experience in teaching digital electronics and computer programming, and he is currently Director of Freshman Engineering at Ohio Northern University. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is active in the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).

Robert Dueck received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, and worked for several years as a design engineer at Motorola Canada in Toronto. He began teaching in 1986, specializing in digital and microcomputer subjects in the Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology programs at Seneca College in Toronto. His first book, Fundamentals of Digital Electronics, was published in 1994, and he has written several additional textbooks. He now teaches digital electronics and related courses at Red River College in Winnipeg. Mr. Dueck is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He served as chair of the Winnipeg Section of IEEE in 2002 and was branch counselor of the Red River College Student Branch from 1997-2006.

About the Author
Philip J. Pratt is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Grand Valley State University, where he taught for 33 years. His teaching interests include database management, systems analysis, complex analysis, and discrete mathematics. He has authored more than 75 textbooks and has co-authored three levels of Microsoft Office Access 2013 books for this popular Shelly Cashman Series and A Guide to SQL.

Mary Z. Last has taught computer information systems since 1984. She retired from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, Texas, where she was an Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Effectiveness in Learning and Teaching. Ms. Last is actively involved in the Computing Educator's Oral History Project that encourages young women to pursue careers in math and science. She has been a contributing author to the Shelly Cashman Series since 1992. She also authors many instructor resources for database texts.

Blurred pictures in digital version.

This review is for the digital rental/purchase.
The book is great and I love the features the kindle app provides. iIt just has one major problem. I have seen it on two of my books so far. The pictures are often blurry and I cannot find a way to improve the quality. It does not cause an issue that often however sometimes graphs and charts are used as reference and the smaller type is hard to see. I often have to message other students who have the physical copy for help with those questions.

The attached picture is from a 200% zoom using the kindle app. I hope this issue can be corrected in the future. The physical copy is crystal clear and I have viewed it from the other students.

The perfect compliment to a desire to exercise.

This book and Judy Alter's earlier book, Surviving Exercise, have the answers I've been looking for. I love to exercise, but I've been plagued with injuries for years. And of course, the injuries set me back and have kept me from exercising as much as I'd like. I've been looking for some sound, scientific information on stretching, but have found very little. I had the feeling stretching would help prevent injuries, but what's the right way to stretch? I had found scientific evidence that stretching can CAUSE injuries, too. It's amazing to me how many books are available about stretching that have no scientific basis whatsoever. Some get their authority from tradition (like yoga) and some are merely the author's opinion. But finally someone has written a book about how to stretch so the stretching actually helps and doesn't harm you. Judy tells you exactly how to do the exercises. Sometimes the stretches are a lot like the ones I've done before, but small differences -- how you hold your foot, the position of your head, whether or not you're keeping your back straight -- can make the difference between hurting yourself with the stretch or helping yourself. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and one of the most important things I recommend is exercise. It makes a big difference in your general attitude and sense of well-being. Alter's book tells you how you can KEEP exercising for your lifetime, without pain or injury. I love this book and highly recommend it.

EVERYONE can benefit from this book

I own this and have given it as a gift many times. I challenge you to learn and do the series of stretches "For All Active People" every day for a week, and see how much more un-tense and flexible you feel! You may not even be aware of just how tight and tense your muscles habitually are from your everyday living, until you release them with these stretches.
There are also other stretch series included, some examples being for Dancers and Professional Athletes, or People Who Sit a Lot. Alter lists stretches which benefit every part of the body from head to toe, and gives easy to follow instructions on how to do each one, with troubleshooting text on how not to do them as well, and clear line drawings.
I have found that the best time to do these stretches is at night after exercise, then take a hot shower and go to sleep. I wake in the morning feeling utterly relaxed, with my leg muscles twitching as though they'd LIKE to tense up as usual, but can't :-D Unfortunately I am a morning person with a fairly physically stressful job, and am almost always way too tired to do this... it takes me a good 45 minutes to work through the "For All Active People" series. So I usually end up doing them in the morning before work, since that is when I have the most energy. If I'm on the Nordic Track by 5:15 I have time to stretch and shower before running out the door to work :-D

A wise and well written guide

This book has really helped me. I'm age 47 and have been plagued by upper back & neck problems; now I manage that condition with both stretching & strengthening exercises based on Alter's book. I've also learned from this book how to position pillows when I sleep, how to manage my son's tendancy for shin splints, and more. I found this book to contain a lot of wisdom, tons of exercises (most are easy to do) very specific to areas of the body or to problems, and written in a clear and very straightforward way.

Many times, at the end of a long, exhausting, and humiliating elentic examination, where no answer has been found, Socrates proposes, "Let's begin again." Whereupon his interlocutor remembers he has pressing business elsewhere.

Socrates believes Athenians should be ashamed they care so much for money, reputation, and glory and so little for virtue and justice. For this reason when Socrates meets someone who says he does care for the most important things, Socrates will not let him go, but examines him. And if, at the end, he is found not to possess virtue, (it should be noted that elentic examination is designed specifically to produce this outcome, to produce aporia), Socrates reproaches him. (Ap 29-30)

Socrates adds that the god has ordered him to do this. (Ap 30, 33) How does Socrates know this was the voice (sign) of god? He does not. All he can do is use his critical reason to interpret the utterances to extract whatever truth is in them. It is obvious that Socrates did believe in a supernatural world which coexists somehow with the normal world. But ultimately he placed his trust in reason, not in the voice of the god.

In fact, Socrates remade the gods in the image of reason. These gods do not quarrel, deceive, or lie as do the gods of traditional Greek religion. No, Socrates' gods are perfectly good. As Plato wrote, "and surely nothing good can be harmful...And what does not harm does no evil...And what does no evil could not be the cause of any evil...And is not the good beneficent...Hence the cause of well-being...So god cannot be the cause of all things, but only good things; of evil things he is not the cause." (Republic 379)

Socrates interpreted the signs of the god as underwriting his elentic activity. Apollo wants people to try to be virtuous and to realize that they do not know what it is to be virtuous. That is, Socrates' divinity is criticizing the values of the Athenian community and ordering them to live differently, to care more for virtue and justice. This was to many Athenians, to say the least, irrating and, to say the most, smacked of impiety.

All the while the Peloponnesian war raged and Athens was extracting terrible retribution from cities like Scione, Torone, and Melos, Socrates kept saying, "it is better to suffer injustice than commit it." Socrates wanted to break the cycle of revenge and retaliation, to waken men from their love of honor and glory which he perceived as turning the world into the nightmare of war and stasis. Injustice is a disease of the soul and life with a sick and corrupted soul was not a life worth living. (Crito 47)

Plato saw Socrates as man fully awake, for which he gave him the title of the wisest, justest, and best. But such ideas of non-retaliation ran counter to traditional Greek notions and gave most Athenians, in contrast to Plato, heartburn. The typical response had to be along the lines, "how could a man be so naive."

After 404 BCE and the traumas of losing the Peloponnesian war followed by the outbreak of civil war to throw out the Spartan installed Critias and the Thirty, who had quickly earned the name tyrants, a growing number began to consider that Socrates' way of thinking was polluting the city and corrupting traditional religion and Athenian democracy.

Charges were brought, Socrates was found guilty, sentenced to death and executed. Was the Athenian jury right or was Plato?

This kindlebook of Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy covers information such as the top of jobs in advertising and some of the people he hired into advertising. For instance, he recalls hiring a 40 year old copywriter who changed jobs eleven times. Creative directors, researchers, account executives, brand managers, directors, and copywriters are some of the jobs mentioned in his book. Ogilvy also mentioned about his job assignment where he advised Omega, a watch company in Switzerland, about their advertising (and of course much more is included in this kindlebook).

Learn from one of the Masters in Advertising

Let's face it, Ogilvy made great headway for the advertising industry. I'd even go as far as saying that his advertising methods are among the best the world has ever seen.

If you're new to the business, interested in the business, or even an old ad dog running out of tricks, you need to own this book. The best part about this book has got to be the visual references of some of the most successful ad campaigns since the dawn of advertising. If you don't take away some new ideas, you need to read it again.

Some of the techniques might be slightly outdated, but you shouldn't rely too heavily on one book for inspiration and information anyway. Also check out

Worth reading

So my boss recomended me to read this book, and told me everyone that works in the advertising business should know about mr. Ogilvy. And he is right, everybody should know who this man is, and I can see why he was so successful in his time. The core content in this book probably still applies, but this book was written in 1985, and I think we can all agree that the advertising business has evolved rapidly during this period. I would recomend all to read this just to know the history of this intelligent man, and I would recomend everybody to read this book if you are looking for an equally good book, with more updated information: Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This: The Classic Guide to Creating Great Ads.
