some good points, some not that great

This text book is very comprehensive and updated (particularly regarding the chapters on genetics and multiculturalism). However, as an introductory text, it contains too much information in too many chapters, often on an intermediate level.

Good Book - So so Delivery

This is an incredibly interesting book with a profound amount of information on Communication Disorders. Each chapter is written by authors that are specialized in all the different areas of this vast topic.
All in all a good read, an essential necessity, especially if studying towards a Speech and Language Pathology degree.

The only negative aspect is the shipping(to New Zealand) which took two and a half weeks longer than promised.

A very important book

Book review for "Asteroid Mining 101"

The book itself is high quality and has clear, easy to read text and many color illustrations.

The book is a follow-up of Mr. Lewis's earlier book "Mining the Sky" but the information here is much more complete, updated to what is known in 2014, and is much more technical. It would be extremely useful, for example, for politicians, investors, or business executives needing to quickly understand the basis for the recent interest and practicality of asteroid mining.

I have bachelor's degrees in applied physics and computer science and it took me about a week to read this book, spending a few hours a night on it. I enjoyed it very much and I will probably read it 2 or 3 more times just to be sure that I understand everything because there is a lot in it to take in. To get the most out of this book I recommend you read Mr. Lewis's other book, "Mining the Sky", first, especially if you don't have a background in science. I did not see any factual errors in the book and it is obvious Mr. Lewis knows the material and has done a lot of quality research bringing this information together.

Once I started to understand the ideas presented in "Mining the Sky" and then in this book, I realized that we (the human race) need to go to space as soon as we possibly can. To me, the human race is similar to a crowd of bored, starving people standing on a sidewalk fighting over a few dried up grains of rice (energy and resources on Earth) who don't realize that all they have to do is turn around and cross a moderately busy street to get to an all you can eat 5 star steak house giving away food for free (the asteroids and comets and other resources in our solar system). Mr. Lewis has given us the tools to pass the biggest IQ test of all time with his books on asteroid mining. In my opinion, Mr. Lewis deserves a Nobel peace prize or at the very least a statue of him made from all of the platinum in the M type asteroid 16 Psyche. Elon Musk said that he started SpaceX and wants to go to Mars because he thinks a future where humans go into space will be much more interesting than one which it doesn't. I agree with him and I would add my own corollary to his statement: humans living in a future where humans don't go into space ultimately have no hope. Probably 90% or more of the problems this world has are political problems, wars, acts of oppression, etc. that are traced back to competition for resources and energy. Mr. Lewis has done a very good job of showing that it doesn't have to be that way because there are enough resources in our solar system to support a population and economy millions of times bigger than what we have now. If we just grow up, start doing a little more long term planning, start believing that we can do this, stop saying it is too hard or too expensive, and put our minds to it so that we can go to space and our future really will be far more interesting.

This book gives me hope.

Asteroid Mining 101. and 201, and 301. It's all here!

There aren't very many science books about space exploitation that rate five stars, but here at last we have one. Lewis states in his preface that he's not going to try to hype the subject matter, and he doesn't disappoint! His presentation is purely matter-of-fact.

In a little more than two hundred pages (including appendix) he packs just about all there is to know about all the asteroids: the near-earthers, the main belt, the Centaurs, the Trojans from Earth to Saturn, the hard-to-access high-inclination space rocks, and even the outermost retrograde-orbiting satellites of Jupiter and Saturn. He explains their orbital statistics and kinematics, the optimal trajectories for reaching them, their minerology (based upon telescopic spectroscopy and meteorite data), and their profit potential. Necessary technologies and techniques for capturing them and extraction of their ores are described thoroughly, though specific engineering solutions are only suggested. This covers just about the whole ball game! The book is replete with charts, lists, and color photos. There is zero fat here.

In his final chapter Lewis asserts that fission nuclear power is a non-starter for environmental and political reasons, and instead suggests thermonuclear fusion. As he admits, this is probably a long way off (as they say, it's always gonna be the energy of the future), and he suggests that we will have to do the best possible with solar power. I hope the potential for advanced fission reactors for electrical power generation is not overlooked. These could be used to power electric plasma or ion engines, or to beam microwaves to distant sail craft. The outer reaches of the Belt are somewhat dim, though it is true that the current JUNO mission en route to Jupiter makes do with solar power alone.

Not just about Mining but also Planetary Defense

I found this book by John Lewis quite interesting and valuable. Although I have always been interested in space development and colonization, I had recently been discounting the importance of planetary defense as the basis for arguing for increased investment in the space program. I thought most hazardous asteroids had been identified and the risk of a really significant impact anytime soon was pretty low. After reading this book, I realized how unpredictable the solar system can be due to complex gravitational interactions among bodies of various shapes and sizes. Now I'm back to using defense from asteroid and comet strikes as an important justification for investment in NASA. Of course, in the long run money gained from mining will be the big motivator, but a bunch of billionaires have already figured that out so I don't have to argue that point with them. There were some technical issues with this book, one whole page is duplicated, but overall I recommend it highly for the semi-lay person like me due to the value of its content.

About the Author
Karen B. Strier (Ph.D., Harvard University, 1986) has been Hilldale Professor of Anthropology and Affiliate Professor of Zoology At University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1989. Her main research interests are to understand the behavioral ecology of primates from a comparative perspective, and to contribute to conservation efforts on their behalf. She has been studying the Northern Muriqui in Brazil's Atlantic forest since 1982. She is also the author of Faces in the Forest: the Endangered Muriqui Monkeys of Brazil.

I'm in my first Biology class.

I'm just becoming interested in biology.
I've read about a third of the book, and I'm half way through because I skipped some parts while I collected information for my essay. I still haven't read about development and communication.

A major focus is explaining primate behaviors and morphology from the ecological and evolutionary perspectives. It takes into account things like population distribution, food supply, and dominance hierarchies. The chapters always start out very interesting although some of her in-depth explanations of why the primates behave in particular ways made me yawn, but I'm more interested in cellular biology anyway. There are distinguished portions of text that contain fascinating topics which encompass subjects beyond primatology.

The parts comparing primate diets and primate anatomy were very interesting. They led me to get other primate books which are more aligned with my interests.

If you get the third edition, as I did, be aware that the taxonomic tree on page 52 is out-dated. Superfamily Hominoidea has undergone some major renovations.
The book acknowledges the Tarsier's debated classification, although you won't know about it if you just look at the picture without reading the chapter's text.
The back of the book has a great, long table categorizing every primate species.

The text is solid without being too heavy. I found it to be a fairly easy read (all textbooks are at least a little dry). The book itself isn't terribly thick and when supplemented with quality lectures it makes for a great textbook. I would recommend it to students and instructors alike.

What is the time scale for the settlement and cracking of an old stone building? I'll probably never know, because despite its claims (and other reviews), this is a book for neither beginner nor layman. This is an academic text for practicing and professional structural engineers, and makes no bones about it; the very first sentence of the preface explains that the chapters in these books were previously published separately as articles in scientific journals, and then synthesized into a whole. And, like most journal papers, this book assumes an incredibly high degree of specialized knowledge. I figured that having an engineering degree myself, I could just brush up on my statics and follow right along; sadly, that was not the case.

The key thing to realize is that this is not some rehash of someone else's theories streamlined for the masses; this is *the* seminal work on how these building stay up, written by the guy who figured it out. This is not the book that references the original source, this IS the original source that other works reference. Read any other paper on the subject, and you will more than likely find this in the bibliography, or passing references to the "Heyman Theory". And, like all good niche scientific papers, it's very terse, poorly edited, and irritatingly overpriced. And while that's fine for Springer Press, you can't call your book "clear" and "lucid" and then pack it full of esoteric technical jargon.

As an example, here is a except from page 8 of the introduction: "If the material of the arch of figure 1.3 is linear-elastic (or obeys any other known deformation characteristic), and if the abutments are rigid, then a unique position can be calculated for the thrust line which equilibrates the given loads (self-weight and any others specified)." It's like this right out of the gate, and only gets more dense as the chapters continue. If you can't immediately recall, say, the difference between elasticity and plasticity, or what makes a structure hyperstatic, then this book is probably out of your league no matter how many times you read each paragraph. Or maybe I'm just a dimwit, I don't know.

A much better alternative (and potential workup for this book) for anyone who is technically inclined but not a licensed structural engineer is "The Science of Structural Engineering", also by the same author. It covers much of the same information, but presents it in a readable, historical context, details the evolution of how new theories replaced the old ones (and why), and has enough example diagrams to demonstrate the problems and solutions without your eyes glazing over.

All that being said, however, if you are interested in this subject either professionally or in passing, you will likely have to get this book at some point no matter what: apart from being the first, it's essentially the only.

For Layman AND Engineer Alike

Jacques Heyman's text is without doubt one of the most interesting books I've read in the last couple of years. I became interested in gothic architecture after seeing for the first time in person a gothic structure, the St. Eustache church in the Les Halles area of Paris. It was 2001, and this first sight of such a building forced me to hearken back to my undergraduate engineering mechanics classes from a decade earlier. The stunning magnificence of my "find" in central Paris that day eventually drove me to more fully explore the structural operation of this style of architecture which lay behind the dramatic visual appearance of "gothic."

I began my little quest by identifying, and then visiting, the principal gothic structures in France (with the help of such great books as Stan Parry's introduction to gothic architecture). I then attempted to identify the key architectural elements common in all these structures. Finally, I researched the historical development of the style all the way from Suger's St. Denis basilica to the emergence of the Renaissance. But all this research left me with some unanswered questions. How do simple forms, such as the pointed arch, the flying buttress, and the barrel vault, actually operate? Why would such forms remain standing up, even when, in some cases, surrounding parts of the building had been destroyed in times of war, or perhaps by stone-robbing to build other structures (for example, structures at Ourscamp, Soissons, and Caen)? For that matter, why even use features such as the flying buttress, when other, simpler forms would suffice?

The Stone Skeleton thoroughly answers these questions, not from an aesthetic or historical view, but from an engineering view, where geometry, stereometry, thrusts, force vectors, the pull of gravity, and the physical properties of concrete and stone are the principal actors of interest. Although it is true that the book does investigate the subject through the lens of engineering (this is the books forte, and why it is such an invaluable addition to the subject), and the volume occupies itself at length with the examination of forces present in concrete and stone structures, most anyone with a moderate mathematical background and the patience to re-read a paragraph until the concepts become clear can profit from this text. In my mind, it is a missing link in the immense genre of gothic architecture texts.

I picture this text to have two related, but nevertheless discrete, audiences. The first is the one described above, the person who is interested in gothic architecture as an historical and aesthetic art phenomenon, and wishes to develop a greater understanding of the structural factors behind such structures. With a little work and patience, the text more than fulfils this need. But the second audience is the actual engineering student or in-practice engineer who wishes to develop a more sophisticated knowledge of the mechanics of concrete and stone structures. In this sense, I could easily see this work used as the textbook for an entire undergraduate or master's level course, or perhaps as a text for a directed independent study, where the end result is a comprehensive understanding of the mechanics of stone structures and the actual operation of the architectural devices present in gothic structures (barrel vaults, groin vaults, domes, arches, pointed arches, piers, flying buttresses, pinnacles, and so on).

I remember at some point in my gothic investigations I came up with a nagging question: why is the lower side of a flying buttress curved? Why not just lay a straight, diagonal beam from the outer wall of the building to the outer buttress pier? Was the curve added for aesthetics? Or was there some important design principle at play? Eager to find the answer and certain that this little fact would be easily discovered, I turned to my mini-library of gothic, only to be repeatedly disappointed (often, tantalizingly so, with texts that ALMOST addressed the question). The answer finally came in Heyman's text, along with many such similar questions. If you, too, are interested in such questions, this book is for you.
