About the Author

Donald J. Leu is a graduate of Michigan State, Harvard, and the University of California, Berkeley. He is the Neag Endowed Chair in Literacy and Technology at the University of Connecticut and holds a joint appointment in the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Psychology. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association and as President of the Literacy Research Association. He is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame.

 

Charles K. (Chuck) Kinzer holds graduate degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of California, Berkeley. He is a Professor of Education in the Communication, Media and Learning Technologies Design Program(at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also directs the Game Research Laboratory. He works to affect positive changes in the teaching and learning of literacy, teacher professional development, and the use of technology in education more broadly. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Literacy Research Association.

Fun and highly-engaging

YUP. If you are preparing to take the Praxis, Foundations of Reading Test, this book is invaluable. Ditto for anyone who plans needs a strong theoretical basis for teaching reading to children. The way it is set up really helps you learn and differentiate all of the concepts and terms. The irony, of course, is that it uses the very reading and fluency strategies it discusses to help you master the content! Also, the interactive setup is really quite fun... never have I found myself getting lost in a textbook like this!

In an ideal world, all instructional content could be set up like this; short and informative paragraphs that are missing key, technical words so that you have to pause and think about the context clues and information you have already learned in order to complete the phrase! Really brilliant, especially for someone who finds themselves 'checking out' when reading semantically-dense text-books. (See what I did there?) Go, and learn!

Solid book, but for newbies.

A great resource for those starting out in the realm of reading and an interesting way to study all the terms and relationships. As part of my Master's degree after 10 years of teaching reading, not helpful at all.

I like the interactive features where you can quiz yourself.
