Dictionary of Louisiana French: As Spoken in Cajun, Creole, and American Indian CommunitiesFrom University Press of Mississippi

The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie. Data were collected during interviews from at least five persons in each of twenty-four areas in these regions. In addition to the data collected from fieldwork, the dictionary contains material compiled from existing lexical inventories, from texts published after 1930, and from archival recordings.

The new authoritative resource, the DLF not only contains the largest number of words and expressions but also provides the most complete information available for each entry. Entries include the word in the conventional French spelling, the pronunciation (including attested variants), the part of speech classification, the English equivalent, and the word's use in common phrases. The DLF features a wealth of illustrative examples derived from fieldwork and textual sources and identification of the parish where the entry was collected or the source from which it was compiled. An English-to-Louisiana French index enables readers to find out how particular notions would be expressed in la Louisiane.

From Booklist
Here is a work of scholarship described by the publisher as “the definitive resource for understanding a distinct French dialect.” Senior editor Valdman is the director of the Creole Institute at Indiana University, and the dictionary was subsidized by Indiana University as well as by Tulane University and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, among others. The goal of the encyclopedia, as stated in the preface, is “to provide an inventory of the vocabulary of Louisiana French reflecting the speech of the period from 1930 to today.” The project team drew from existing lexical studies and also conducted fieldwork within a representative sampling of Louisiana’s French-speaking communities. Archival recordings served as additional source material. All entries were vetted by project team members who are native Cajuns. Entries and subentries contain spelling variants, a phonetic transcription, part of speech, an English equivalent, examples with English translations, source codes for the examples, and codes identifying the parishes and texts where the term was found. Some entries also contain usage notes. For example, we learn that habitant (farmer) is “sometimes pej.” (or pejorative). The illustrative examples make fascinating reading because many of them are based on interviews with native speakers. Among examples for mettre, some of whose definitions (translated into English) include “to put,” “to put in,” or “to put on,” are “I remember my grandmother, she took newspapers to put up on the wall for wallpaper, she did that”; “We would make a chicken fricassee and put dumplings in it”; and “His legs were surely as big as my cigar, but he wore a size fourteen shoe.” Capping off the dictionary is a substantial reverse English–Louisiana French index. As standard English-language dictionaries in print form dwindle, this volume is a superlative example of a highly specialized dictionary that definitely fills a gap. It is recommended for academic libraries with extensive linguistics collections and for both academic and large public libraries with collections related to the region. Dictionary lovers should seek it out. --Mary Ellen Quinn

Attractive, Scholarly, and Useful Book
By H. Paul Honsinger
First, full disclosure. I bought the book mainly because I am a childhood acquaintance of one of the editors and wanted to utter a small voice of support for her. BUT, when I got my hands on this lovely book a few months ago, my response was "Wow!" Not only is it a big, beautifully-printed, exactingly-researched volume, it had in it all of those words that I remember my Cajun grandmother, aunts, and uncles using that I never quite got based on my own "school French." Sometimes, I just pick up the book and leaf through the pages, encountering gems--words and terms that I heard from my Arceneaux, LeBlanc, and Bernard relatives but never really got, colorful expressions, and just plain goodies.

If you are Cajun, part Cajun, deal with Cajuns, or even if you just want to plop a juicy slice of American Language on your plate, this is a really good book. It is not just for scholars. I pull this book off the shelf at least once a week and have really gotten a kick out of having it in my library. I hope it sells a lot of copies.

I am truly surprised that this is the first review of this book on Amazon. It hope it has gotten coverage in the academic press (which I do not read) because it is worthy of lots of praise.

Concise and detailed
By Elias J. Mcclellan
Just as promised this is a concise dictionary of Louisiana French to English with detailed phrasing and use in context. I'm using this book as a reference to a culture I've lived around for decades but know little about. I mistakenly bought another book first and there is no comparing the two. This book is immensely valuable to anyone studying the language and people of Louisiana. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Louisiana Girl learning Louisiana French
By acadienfille
I am a Louisiana native presently taking a Louisiana French class taught in my community. I grew up hearing my mom, grandmother, aunts and uncles speaking French. I recently decided that I want to learn my native language so that I can pass it on to my nieces, nephews and future grandchildren. I love this book and refer to it daily! This book is kept out in my kitchen or living room because I am constantly looking up words, especially when speaking French with my mom. When my mom can't remember a French word, I look it up in this book. When my friend and I remember French words that we used daily as children, we get a kick out of looking these words up in this book. It is a great reference book! I have begun to speak French words and sayings to my family, they are learning. My nieces and nephews even ask me how to say things in French! I highly recommend this book as a reference source. A great big "thank you" to everyone who contributed to the writing of this book! It is a GREAT contribution to preserving Louisiana French! Merci beaucoup!
