Handsome, Graphic Reference Guide to Business Nuts and Bolts.
By mirasreviews
"How Business Works" is a graphic guide to how companies operate in the modern world from DK Publishing. Four authors and a consultant editor contributed to this volume, which divides its subject into four parts: How Companies Work, How Finance Works, How Sales and Marketing Work, and How Operations and Production Work. Each part is subdivided into topics, which are further divided and presented one topic to a two-page spread or occasionally a four-page spread. For example, How Companies Work is comprised of the sub-topics Business Ownership, Start-Ups, Buying and Selling Businesses, Who's Who, Corporate Structure, and Human Resources. The explanations of the different types of ownership, aspects of a business plan, explanations of mergers and acquisitions, business personnel, business cultures, corporate structures, and the human resource cycle, etc. are presented in 33 two-page spreads.
The spreads are infographics with text, so reading is required. Many pages have a box of "need to know" terms with definitions. When examples are given, they are usually from the United States, Great Britain, or the European Union. The intended audience for this book is not clear to me. Judging by the subtitle, " A Graphic Guide To Business Success", my impression is that the publisher intends the book as a reference for business owners and senior employees. But the topics are only addressed in overview. They help the reader understand business concepts and terminology. For example, the section on marketing explains some terms with which I was unfamiliar: outbound and inbound marketing, engagement marketing, relationship marketing, and the section on operations explains different approaches to production and management. It explains how and why they function, but this is not enough information to put them into action.
"How Business Works" focuses on the nuts and bolts, how business is actually done, rather than theory-for those in business or those trying to understand references that they read or strategies that they see online or in brick-and-mortar businesses. It allows the reader to understand what business entails on levels that most of us don't see. Concepts and strategies from both industrial-era business (e.g. managing factories, making paper, bringing produce to market) and from digital-era businesses (e.g. digital marketing, social media, big data) are covered. As the book was written for English-speaking audiences everywhere, there are blue pages at the end of the book which provide US-specific information on relevant laws, organizations, and resources for each of the book's four sections. There is also an index. The colorful graphics make this a handsome, enticing reference volume, but read through it once to see what is covered.

I did not expect to be this impressed

I have always liked using DK books with my kids. They seem to always do a fabulous job of taking something big and complicated, and then breaking it down into manageable pieces, with graphics that help convey meaning.
This book shows that they can do the same thing for older people too. "Business" is a big and complicated topic, but DK breaks it down and gives a nice, basic overview. I choose overview, because obviously, this cannot possible get too in-depth. However, it isn't just a breezy introduction either.
I flipped to the page on Financial Accounting, for instance. I majored in Accounting, spent some time as a CPA, and have worked a lot of private-sector accounting jobs since then. No, you don't come out of these two pages knowing how to put together a P&L Statement or how to conduct an audit. But you know what the statement is for, and why auditing exists. And a couple of pages later, you get another spread on what the P&L Statement is about with more detail.

Journey of a Thousand Businesses Begins with Two Beats: A Fisher Price Guide to Business Structure
By Brian M. Ranzoni
--Brass Tacks--
Colorful and bright: the pages hold my attention.
Death to Word Art: sometimes the pages are cluttered with pointless word art.
Recto and Verso: delivers the data in bite-sized, two page chunks.
Who’s on First: I am not entirely sure of who the audience is supposed to be.

How Business Works is focused on westernized business and not on any specific nationality. American examples come up regularly, but this is a British book and its topics ultimately address all the English-speaking nations.
Regulations vary between communities, states and nations: so the overview of company types and structures are generic. The book never wades into legalese. It does not direct readers to local laws and business registration. It also does not delve into dirty details of negotiating franchises, co-ops or incorporations. Some of the legal assumptions are built into existing topics, such as when the book reminds you that a cooperative can share profits but a charity is strictly not-for-profit. You just won’t read about the revenue codes for non-profits in any given government.
Otherwise, the text covers basic company structures, finances, sales and marketing, and finally operations and productions. All valuable information for running the show. Superficial info unfortunately. Broad in scope and tightly organized by topic, the depth is a little too shallow. Each topic within each chapter gets a two-page spread. This strikes a regular beat of predictability and accessibility.
At first glance the pages appear to be heavy with graphics. They kick off the opening chapters with simple layouts, basic shapes, and plenty of white space—inviting and digestible. Make no mistake, this isn’t a children’s book. Most of the information is actually text, and as the book goes on the instruction gets a little deeper and more complicated. Far as comprehension goes, the reading register is about 6th grade in the earliest parts of the book, and creeps up to high school by the middle. This happens because the book gradually introduces more business jargon into longer passages.
The book binding is pretty sturdy too. I carried it around in my work backpack for weeks, studying it on breaks and my lunch hour. The bottom took some shelf wear shifting around in the bag, and the cover was exposed to moisture from various cold drinks and frozen dinners. The text remains intact and legible. Although my backpack eventually managed to rip the dust jacket, it is a hardy hardcover overall.

Is the book overall worth the price of admission?
As an overview instead of instruction, the book works. It creates a big picture out of steady and easy to swallow beats. It covers a broad range of topics without getting into nuts and bolts. The page layout and the organization of the topics seems to hit exactly what the authors wanted: attractive and legible.
On the other hand, the emphasis on breadth over depth means that How Business Works cannot guide you on how to work your particular shop in your particular market in your particular locale. Although the guide is indeed graphic, it cheats a bit through heavy use of word art. While there are quite a few flow charts in the book, the Fisher Price toy look gets a touch too childish for my tastes, and there aren’t as many other kinds of tables or charts as I expected.
I think How Business works could be useful for high school and community college-level students. Also, any person who simply wants a one-shop stop to learn about biz basics. Folks who are trying to decide if it is a good idea to get into their own business may also find this book helpful.
