Great addition to the Empire at War series and with a truly epic space battle at the end.

Great addition to the Empire at War series and with a truly epic space battle at the end.
Things I liked? Elements of the story were foreshadowed in earlier books – just enough hints at the time to make a reader think “I wonder if…” without being too obvious. That said, there were a few twists to the aliens of “Second Front” that folks won’t see coming, yet they too make complete sense and fit in with what some readers suspect might be coming. Very well done Mr Dandridge! Its hard to both successfully foreshadow a plot without giving too much away while still managing to surprise he reader at the same time.
Other things I liked? The particular use of a wormhole towards the end of the book. This one isn’t so much a foreshadowing from early books, as a “When will this truly scary application be used?” Its military application is spotted by the humans several books earlier and now they get to use it – and its very well used indeed!... but now how can it be defended against? Dandridge has a good track record of balancing tech so now that he’s used his wormhole as he has, one suspects he must have a counter – I sure as hell hope so!
One particular use we haven’t seen so far is just dropping a tiny wormhole on a planet, going a few ks deep with its self-digging ability and then just letting it grow sink core-ward….. or link the wormhole to say an enormous gravitational gradient on the far end… like a certain black hole. You could easily wreck a continent this way. Or how about digging deep and then using the wormhole as its use in this book… truly scary. Or lining it up in front of a pulsar and beaming the output out as the ultimate beam weapon... hmmm
More good stuff? Just who actually “arrested” a certain person at a certain conference? Maybe the good guys… and maybe not. Another good mystery to unravel! And we still haven’t seen anything from the Alternate Universe project yet.. but its mentioned again.
Ambivalent in this book? A certain assassin character. Could work, maybe not. A good anti-hero maybe, but again maybe not… my guess? Watch this space – could go either way.
What didn’t I like? The pace seemed a bit rushed and the Fenri storyline in particular was covered off too quickly– more detail please! Just how were the Fenri defeated after the butt-womping they gave the humans last book. And the female villains… all a bit of a piece and a pattern is starting to emerge in Dandridge’s work. More depth here please and why are all short women evil (especially UN types)? Although maybe that’s a real world question… hmmm
Overall? The second half of the book is much better than the first and the battle scenes and morality/maturity of the protagonists’ actions continue to impress (no fake guilt, hand wringing or sitting around doing nothing when hard choices are presented. And no Weber padding either – by this stage most series start to bloat with fill. Not this one. Action all the way.
Five stars.

The series gets better with every release
By Larry Southard
The series is one of my favorites. Humanity finally links up across the galaxy but, the humans on the other side are not what one expects. They are the second front of the wars with the Caca's and the Caca's have finally found the secret homeworld of the other branch of humanity and plan to utterly destroy them.
Sean and Wroblowski are our two main protagonists. Sean continues to be The Emporer - sending even those he considers friends on do or die missions. There are some terrific space battle scenes.and the action is ongoing. Dandridge has produced yet another gem in the series. In fact, the writing and the books themselves seem to get better with every new release. This is a definite addition for anyone who enjoys Weber or Ringo's works (sorry no zombies).

Another chapter in the Exodus empires series
By J
This book is the best book Doug has ever written. It could have been published by a traditional publishing house, and has the same quality of editing I would expect from a traditionally published book. As for the story, it is fast-paced, well-written with fully formed fictional characters. The difference between the first book in this book is very large, and the quality of writing keeps on improving.
