Mark Puryear has practiced the �satr� religion for over 18 years, during which time he has dedicated himself to the study and promotion of its traditions and tenets. He and his wife, Katia, work together in rebuilding The Norroena Society, originally founded in the late 19th century by Rasmus Anderson.

Great Asatru Intro!

This book is not only an intro, but it also has real philosophical meat to it that most other "asatru" books do not have. It describes REAL Asatru for TRU folk. No PC fluffy tru-isms here thank you! This book rocks! Read it!

Decent introductory book on Asatru

Essential Reading!!

There are not many books on Asatru out there and even fewer that are good reading. Most books are simply liberalism disguised as Asatru and one constantly reads "the ancient teutons believed this" or the "the vikings used to do that" one gets the feeling of reading a history book and not a living religion, not with this book. This book addresses a true living religion of today based on the living continuation of the ancient faith of the north. Furthermore it is one of the first books I have read that is true to what most heathen groups believe, rather than being some new age book in disguise. I would definately say if you are interested in Heathenry this should be the first book you buy, because also it includes a very good translation of the Havamal which is our most sacred text.
On the down side, this book is not very complete. I read one complaint that it doesn't go into the mythology and "lore" too much. Firstly it does address the gods and lore and such. Though unlike some books it talks about other things as well, primarily morality and ideology (as the title suggests) I find this as a good thing, as to me fairy tales and mythology only play a secondary role in religion and is over emphasised in Asatru. If you want lore read it from the source directly (such as the Sagas or the Eddas, though many Asatruar consider Snorri's work as sacred, Snorri was a Christian who did not write his works for any religious purpose and indulged in mostly entertaining stories and narratives, furthermore the bulk of the later "lore" is contradictory, therefore I recomend reading the older Sagas). Focusing too much on lore would be like saying to understand Christianity one must study in depth the mythology of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and such. Which really bear little relevance to the main religion. Also one will not find anything on rituals, holy days, symbols etc. This is simply an introduction to the philosophies and morals and such of the religion, then followed by the Havamal, and a liberal essay written by his sister on womens role in Asatru, which did not seem as well written or as conservative as his work but still a good contribution. So while it is a great book and a great starting point, in no way is it a complete one.
It addresses the racial issue, and spoke a little too much about it I think. One should not feel the need to argue constantly for many pages reasons to justify love of ones own people. But I suppose it is a sign of the times. Though I agree with his codemnation of the "hate" ideology that is prevalent in some Asatruar, I think he goes a little too far in asking us to show automatic respect to all races and religions. We should not by default hate others, but on the other hand respect is earned. For example if a group of people consistently underperform or succumb to criminal behavior and such, I'm not going to ignore such for fear of "invalidating" them or "hurting their feelings", nor will I ignore scientific or social fact or any othe form of truth, because someone deems it politically incorrect. Anyway I'm glad to see someone taking a realistic, and honorable stance on the subject without being a psychotic exteremist or some liberal white hating femenist either. He takes a sensable and logical middle ground which is neither extreme nor disagreeable to any reasonable person (even if you don't agree with every single detail). Also I feel it is a stance that would be agreed upon by most Asatruar. In summary this book seems to reflect the living embodiment of Asatru today better than any other one I have come across. I hope it will be translated into many languages and become essential reading in most troths, Kindreds and other Asatru/Heathen religious groups.
On another note though there are various things I disagree with in this book. Firstly I contacted the group that publishes this book about working together to further Asatru, they ignored me. Which is strange because the author says "there are no denominations of Asatru" and "We are all one big Asatru nation" then they shun outsiders. The other thing is they make up a lot of their own stuff, which contradicts what %95 of other Asatru groups believe, such as their 9 virtues being completely different. So when some other reviewers commented negatively about how they are trying to "make up their own religion" I understand what they mean, but the overwhelming majority of it is completely in line with what most Asatruar believe. However that's the nature of the religion, that people discover their own truths through education, and agree to a certain standard of morality, history and lore to unite us. However, I feel his stance on issue's is a good neutral ground where the overwhelming majority of Asatruar would agree with this book, plus the few points I disagree with are nothing compared to all of the great wisdom provided.
A few strange things are present in this book though. For one the nine virtues he listed are not exactly the same as that which is agreed upon by %95 of Asatruar that I know of. While his list of virtues are agreeable that seemed strange. The other thing, he says there is no priestly class of Asatru, which is not true we have Gothar, though rare in modern Asatru, these are people who dedicate themselves to religious service to the community, help counsel members of the kindred etc. perform certain functions in rituals etc. He also states that Asatruar would never restrict the freedom of others, which is a somewhat historically slanted statement considering our ancestors did involve themselves in slavery and lordship over others. Our old system was based more on the concept of loyalty than on personal freedom. Also he constantly bashes Rome, which is somewhat innacurate. Rome originally was a Pagan society that respected other people's religions and indigenous rights to at least semi-autonomy and to pursue their own cultural roots. It was the later Holy Roman Empire ruled by the Catholic church, that is the empire after it had decayed from its height that committed the vast number of atrocities and intolerance that he attributes to Rome itself. Rome is actually a wonderful example of European history that should be shown a little more respect, or in the least be a little more accurate when attributing atrocity's to the Romans. He also addresses our gods as perfect role models which is not in keeping with how they are represented in lore (as flawed beings capable of great good but also human mistakes). He states that the Christians misrepresented our gods as actual old kings and ancestors in order to weaken us spiritually, but actually there is a lot of fact behind this theory. Nor is it uncommon. Jesus Christ was a real historical figure, so was Buddha, it is likely that our gods were actual ancestors of great merit, which is in line with the fact that Asatru is an ancestral religion (honoring and even worshipping ancestors to a degree). They also are symbols of our folk and religion as well as emodiments of natural forces (consult proffesor Calr Jungs essays for further reference regarding such).
