50 REASONS TO STUDY SUCCESS

As a scholar of success, and a student of human behavior, I took an immediate interest in this book. Did it fulfill my expectations? Yes, in more ways than one.

For those of you who are interested in uncovering the characteristics of successful people, Tom Butler-Bowdon has created an excellent resource and reference guide.

The book essentially provides profiles of individuals who you may, or may not know (my favorite happened to by Cheryl Richardson, tax consultant turned author, and Frank Bettger, fomer St. Louis Cardinals baseball star). Their stories expose formulas for success through a theme of redundancy that will become obvious to you. Here's a partial list of the success traits which these stories reveal and elaborate on:

-Optimism
-A definite aim, purpose, vision
-Willingness to work
-Disciplined
-Integrated mind (intuitive)
-Prolific readers
-Risk takers
-High expectations (of themselves)
-Mastery
-Well-rounded

Admittedly, a collection of people whose successes are unfamiliar to you, doesn't engender the greatest enthusiasm about investigating them; however, success is success - no matter how you slice it. Therein lies the strength of this book. I'd recommend this book to anyone who studies success as a subject, or as a passionate interest.

First off, in my opinion, this is a pretty complete list. Secondly, I have had the pleasure of reading many of these books and the author does a great job of summarizing some of my favorites. BTW, my favorites are Think and grow Rich and the Science of Getting Rich. I picked up a few good ideas on books to read from his list and if I could go back in time to my early 20s, this list would be a great start to a successful life.

Although useful, such writings tend to focus on adaptation of western approaches, not on development of new ones designed specifically for varied sociocultural settings around the world.

The editors have produced this book for a number of reasons. There has been tremendous growth in the teaching of public relations around the world--enhancing practice in many countries outside North America. There has also been rapid growth in the number of professors who demand theoretical perspectives which might facilitate a unified comparative analysis across countries and regions. Only a few U.S. universities--six documented in this book--now teach courses formerly called "International Public Relations." However, many professors are going abroad to teach and do research. This suggests increased interest in and a need for courses dealing with international public relations. Furthermore, there is a dearth of literature dealing in depth with international PR, an important component of international communication.

This appears to be the first book-length comparative analysis of public relations as practiced in various countries and regions around the world. Although existing books on international PR focus largely on ways in which western practitioners, employers, and clients can operate effectively in other countries, this volume views public relations in each country or region covered from the perspective of practitioners in that country. It contains six chapters designed to provide a theoretical anchor for the 14 country and region analyses. Given the intense interest in public relations education as a factor in professional enhancement, it also discusses issues and practices relating to education.

About the Author

Donald J. Leu is a graduate of Michigan State, Harvard, and the University of California, Berkeley. He is the Neag Endowed Chair in Literacy and Technology at the University of Connecticut and holds a joint appointment in the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Psychology. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association and as President of the Literacy Research Association. He is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame.

 

Charles K. (Chuck) Kinzer holds graduate degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of California, Berkeley. He is a Professor of Education in the Communication, Media and Learning Technologies Design Program(at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also directs the Game Research Laboratory. He works to affect positive changes in the teaching and learning of literacy, teacher professional development, and the use of technology in education more broadly. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Literacy Research Association.

Fun and highly-engaging

YUP. If you are preparing to take the Praxis, Foundations of Reading Test, this book is invaluable. Ditto for anyone who plans needs a strong theoretical basis for teaching reading to children. The way it is set up really helps you learn and differentiate all of the concepts and terms. The irony, of course, is that it uses the very reading and fluency strategies it discusses to help you master the content! Also, the interactive setup is really quite fun... never have I found myself getting lost in a textbook like this!

In an ideal world, all instructional content could be set up like this; short and informative paragraphs that are missing key, technical words so that you have to pause and think about the context clues and information you have already learned in order to complete the phrase! Really brilliant, especially for someone who finds themselves 'checking out' when reading semantically-dense text-books. (See what I did there?) Go, and learn!

About the Author
Gilles Dowek is a mathematician, logician and computer scientist, and currently a researcher at the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA). He is a member of the scientific board of the Soci�t� informatique de France and of CERNA. He is also a consultant with the National Institute of Aerospace, a NASA-affiliated laboratory. He is the recipient of the French Mathematical Society's Grand Prix d'Alembert des Lyc�ens for his popular science work.

Pierre Guillot is a lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Strasbourg's Institute of Advanced Mathematical Research (IRMA).

Marion Roman is a France-based translator.
